No lofty distinction remains but you have been singled out for it,
No virtue remained unattributed to you,
in knowledge, excellence, valor, and generosity.
In knowledge, excellence, valor and generosity.

For you move from giving to piety,
You move from generosity to piety,
to a sword, to a page, to a pen.
To sword, to excellence, to pen.

A versatility by which you surpassed the foremost kings—
A transfer that adorned the signs of kings,
how clear the difference between the head and the foot!
How distinct is the difference between head and foot.

Let me embellish the ornaments of a reign acknowledged
Let me decorate the jewelry of a king who allowed
by those throughout the lands, Arabs and non-Arabs.
To him from all regions, Arabs and non-Arabs.

لزومthe adherence of غيريothers besides me شكراًgratitude غيرnot مختتمcompleted
I have held fast to full gratitude for his favor,
I remained sealed with gratitude for his favors,
as others hold to gratitude left incomplete.
Unlike others, gratitude that is not sealed.

I bought his bounty with thanks, hand to hand;
I bought with gratitude his blessings hand in hand,
so marvel at scattered bounty bought with ordered verse.
So strange is the scattered one who buys the organized.

منwhoever عاينbeheld الصبحthe dawn لمnot يجنحincline إلىtoward الظُلَمdarkness
I forbade myself thanks to anyone else, devoting myself to him alone;
I deprived gratitude to others and monopolized it,
one who has beheld the dawn does not incline toward darkness.
Whoever sees the dawn does not incline to the darkness.

And I heeded no reproach for loving him;
And I did not care about blame in loving him,
for reproach for loving him is a kind of madness.
For blame in his love is a kind of defects.

قلبٌa heart إذاwhen نامslept أهلُthe people of اللهوamusement لمnot ينمsleep
Kings slept heedless of glory, but he was awakened
Kings slept from the sublime and he awakened,
by a heart that, when pleasure-seekers slept, did not sleep.
A heart, if the people of vanity sleep, does not sleep.

وكمand how much وجودٍexistence إذاwhen حققتyou examine closely كالعدمlike nonexistence
In him, the very definition of existence is realized;
The limit of existence made his reality correct,
and how much existence, on examination, is like nonexistence!
And how much existence, if proven, is like non-existence.

Others clothed him in robes of their praise,
Others wore his praises as gowns,
but I placed my praise where the embroidered border belongs.
But I made my praise a sign of knowledge.

May his radiant brow ever put the full moon's light to shame,
The light of the full moon still accessorizes him,
and his fingertips' bounty make the steady rains needless,
The existence of his fingernail suffices instead of lamps.

as long as, beneath his banner, the earth is drenched
No rain watered the land under his flag,
in skulls' blood by the lightning of the keen-edged sword.
Only the blood of skulls from the sharp sincere swords.
