More anguished than I since you went away; I only

console myself with fortitude and patience.

Otherwise, my sighs are hotter than ghada embers,

over you, and my eyelids stream more freely than rain.

If only I knew: will closeness to you return?

But how far off! How much wilderness lies between me and you!

Perhaps He by whose decree the parting came

will restore our vanished life to us—we do not know.

Then we shall let our gazes roam across those broad valleys,

passing from a lush meadow to a river.

And we shall climb; between the two rocks are vistas

revealing all that lies from the pool to the sea.

And we shall inhale the breeze's cool, moist breaths,

perfumed among the rivulets and blossoms.

I remembered her, with separation between me and her,

and whoever yearns must suffer remembrance's anguish.

Indeed, by my love for her—rather, for you, for it

has taken firm hold between my ribs and breast—

she donned her beauty only through your beauty,

and a beautiful woman cannot do without a waft of perfume.

And go on—now that I have given my longing its due—

Look again [reading uncertain] at the full moon and the fresh bough.

Has a bloom of gladness, then, appeared upon the bough?

And has the full moon's face shone out from her clouds?

And have the lean steeds a course among the lean ones,

with raging lions whose lairs are thickets of tawny spears?

And what of the vow I made to fast

upon reunion—ten days added to a month?
