صَفَاran clear لِيَfor me وِردُwater to drink الحُبِّof love حَتَّىuntil وَرَدتُهُI came to drink from it
فأصبَحتُthen I became فيهِin it بالتَّنسُّمِby inhaling the breeze مُغتصَّاchoking
Love's water ran clear for me until I came to drink from it;
The rose of love was purified for me until I attained it,
then I found myself choking there even on a breath of air.
So I became immersed in it, breathing it in.
صَلَيتُI burned بِنَارِin the fire الوَجدِof longing فيin حُبِّlove of سَيِّدٍa master
دوَاعِيenticements هَوَاهُof love for him للمُحبِّينَfor lovers لاnot تُحصَىare counted
I burned in longing's fire for love of a master
I prayed with the fire of passion for the love of my master,
whose love holds countless enticements for lovers.
His incentives of love for lovers cannot be counted.
صَغيرُthe slightest هَواهُlove for him فيin الفُؤادِthe heart مَنِيَّةٌdeath
فماthen what الظَّنُّthe expectation إنif أوفىit reaches عَلَىto الأمَدِthe limit الأقصىfurthest
The slightest love for him is death within the heart;
The little of his love in my heart is a wish,
what, then, should one expect if it reaches its furthest limit?
So what of the thought if he fully grants longevity?
صَبَغتُI dyed دُمُوعِيmy tears بالدِّماءِwith blood لأنَّنيbecause I
سَأَلتُI asked فماbut not مُلِّكتُI was granted قَبضاًa handful ولاnor قَبصاa pinch
I dyed my tears with blood, because I
I dyed my tears with blood, because I
asked, but was given neither a handful nor a pinch.
Asked but was not given a single grasp or release.
I was true to you مَحضَpure الوُدِّaffection ثمّthen اتَّهمتَنيyou suspected me
وظاهِرُand the outward aspect حَاليof my state فِيكَregarding you قَدalready بَلَغَhas reached النَّصَّاexplicit clarity
I was true to you in pure affection, yet you suspected me,
I was true to you with absolute affection, yet you accused me,
though my outward state toward you has become utterly plain.
And my clear state with you has reached advice.
صُدِدتُI was barred عَنِfrom الحَظّthe good fortune الَّذيthat أنَاI طالِبٌseek
فَهاso here أنَالاَI am not أُدنىbrought near إليكَto you ولاnor أُقصىam I cast away
I was barred from the good fortune I seek;
I am prevented from the fortune that I seek,
so here I am, neither drawn near to you nor cast away.
So I cannot come closer to you, nor keep away.
صَحِبتُI accompanied هوىthe longing قَلبيof my heart إليكَtoward you فطاعَنيand it obeyed me
وَطالَبتُهُand I demanded of it بالصَّبرِpatience دونَكَwithout you فاستعصَىthen it rebelled
I went along with my heart's longing for you, and it obeyed me;
I accompanied the love of my heart for you, so it obeyed me,
and when I demanded patience of it without you, it rebelled.
And I asked it for patience without you, but it refused.
صِفَاتِيَmy attributes لاno مَوصُوفَbearer of attributes فِيهاin them لأنَّنيbecause I
I have ceased to be فلاso not رُوحاًa soul أُحِسُّI sense ولاnor شَخصاa bodily form
My attributes have no bearer, for I
My qualities have no described one, because I
have ceased to be; I sense neither soul nor bodily form.
Am annihilated, so I feel no soul or person.
صَبَرتُI was patient عَلىwith أشياءَthings فيكَfor your sake احتَمَلتُهاI endured them
ولَولاَكَand were it not for you لِمwhy أزدَدwould I increase عَلىfor ألَمٍpain حِرصاin eagerness
I was patient with things I endured for your sake;
I was patient with things in you that I tolerated,
were it not for you, why would I grow more eager for pain?
And were it not for you, why would I increase in pain?
صِفُواprescribe لِيfor me دَواءَthe remedy الوصلof union إِنَّيindeed I باذِلٌam offering
لَكُمto you فِيهِin exchange for it نَفسِيmy life ثُمَّthen أعتَقِدُI consider الرُّخصَاthe low cost
Prescribe for me the remedy of union; I offer
Purify for me the cure of union, I am one who sacrifices,
you my life for it, and still consider it a bargain.
For you in it my soul, then I hold permitted.
