غَلاhas grown costly الحُبُّlove فابذُلso give freely فيهِfor it نَفسَكَyourself طَائعاًwillingly
لَعَلَّكَperhaps you إنif يمَّمتَyou turn toward حِبَّكَyour beloved تَبلغyou will arrive
Love is costly, so willingly give yourself for it;
Perhaps, if you turn toward your beloved, you will arrive.
غليلُburning ache الأسَىsorrow عَمَّاabout what أُكِنُّI conceal مُتَرجِمٌan interpreter
وإنَّand indeed لِسَانَthe tongue الحَالِof one's condition أمضَىmore piercing وأبلَغُand more eloquent
Sorrow's burning ache gives voice to what I conceal;
And indeed, the tongue of one's condition is keener and more eloquent.
غَلِطتُI erred وقَدand already عَرَّضتُI exposed قَلبِيmy heart للهَوىto passion
فأصبَحَso it became مِنfrom كُُلِّevery الجَوانبِside يُلدغُit is stung
I erred, for I had exposed my heart to passion;
So it came to be stung from every side.
فَهاso here أنَالاَI do not انفَكُّcease أُضحِيI spend the morning وأنشَغُand I gasp with sobs
With drowned eyelids or ribs aflame—
So here I am, morning after morning, choking with sobs.
غَفَوتُI dozed لَعَلِّيhoping I might أنto أرَىsee مَنthe one whom أُحِبُّهُI love him
وأينَand where الكَرَىslumber مِنfrom سَاهرٍone lying awake يتمَرَّغُtosses and turns
I dozed, hoping to see the one I love;
But how far slumber is from a wakeful man who tosses and turns!
غَضَضتُI lowered جُفونِيmy eyelids عَنfrom سِواكَanyone but you لأنَّنيbecause I
رَأيتُI found فُؤادِيmy heart مِنكَfrom you لاnot يتفرَّغُbecomes free
I closed my eyelids to all but you, because I
found that my heart is never free of you.
غَلبتَyou have prevailed عَلِىover قَلبيmy heart وسَمعِيand my hearing ونَاظِريand my sight
فَحُكمُكَso your rule فيin سِرِّيmy private life وجَهرِيand my public life يُسَوَّغُis sanctioned
You have conquered my heart, my hearing, and my sight;
So your rule in my private and public life is sanctioned.
غَنِيمَةُthe spoils أهلِthe people of الحُبِّlove سُهدٌsleeplessness ومَدمَعٌand tears
كذاكَthus هِلالُthe crescent of الحُبِّlove فيin القَلبِthe heart يَنزغُstirs up unrest
The spoils of lovers are sleeplessness and tears;
Thus love's crescent stirs unrest within the heart.
غِياباتُthe dark recesses قَلبِيof my heart للمحبَّةِfor love مَطلَعٌa rising-place
ولاand no شَكَّdoubt أنَّthat الصَّابَbitter sap بالرَّغمِagainst one's will يُمضَغُis chewed
My heart's dark recesses are love's rising-place;
And surely bitter sap is chewed against one's will.
غَريبُthe exile الهَوىof love فِيin راحَتَيهِhis two palms كتابُهُhis letter
وَلكِنَّهُand yet the fact is قَلَّis rare الأمِينُthe trustworthy one المُبَلِّغُwho delivers
Love's exile holds his letter in his palms,
But a trustworthy messenger is rare.
