وَجدٌ وسهد ودم يسفك

وَجدٌ وسهد ودم يسفك

يا رحمة الله كذا أهلكُ

يا رحمة الله كذا أهلكُ

Longing, sleeplessness, and blood being shed.

Passion and pillows and bloodshed

O mercy of God, thus I perish!

Oh God's mercy, thus he perished

أفنى ولا يعلم إلاَّ الذي

أفنى ولا يعلم إلاَّ الذي

يقبلني إن شاء أو يترك

يقبلني إن شاء أو يترك

I waste away, and none knows but the one

He passed away though only He knew

who accepts me if he wills, or leaves me.

Who will accept me or abandon me

يا سيّدا من نور تذكاره

يا سيّدا من نور تذكاره

خواطر في خاطر تسلك

خواطر في خاطر تسلك

O master, from the light of whose remembrance

Oh Master of the light that reminds me

thoughts thread their way through the mind.

Thoughts roam my mind

لم أتّخذ غيرك لي مؤنساً

لم أتّخذ غيرك لي مؤنساً

ومدّعي التّوحيد لا يشرك

ومدّعي التّوحيد لا يشرك

I have taken none but you as my companion,

I took none but You as my companion

and one who professes God's oneness admits no partner.

The claimant of oneness does not associate

ملكتني ملّكتني ذا بذا

ملكتني ملّكتني ذا بذا

يا عجباً أملك أم أملك

يا عجباً أملك أم أملك

You possessed me; you made me an owner—this for that.

You possessed me, owned me completely

O wonder! Do I possess, or am I possessed?

How strange! Do I own or am owned?

لا ذقت طعم الوصل إن لم أكن

لا ذقت طعم الوصل إن لم أكن

على القضا في حبّه أمسك

على القضا في حبّه أمسك

May I never taste the savor of union if I do not

I tasted not the flavor of union unless

hold firm under fate's decree in loving him,

I held fast to fate in His love

أو لم أشمر لابتغاء المنى

أو لم أشمر لابتغاء المنى

وأنني أطلب ما يدرك

وأنني أطلب ما يدرك

or do not gird myself in pursuit of hopes,

Or I did not roll up my sleeves

and I seek what can be attained.
