Listen, for the best of all beings has virtues

He proclaimed the virtues of the best of mankind

that attest to his established power and loftiest honor.

Pointing to empowerment and honorable captivity

أتى والورى أسرى فكان غياثهم

أتى والورى أسرى فكان غياثهم

بنور سماء ينقلون عن الإسرا

بنور سماء ينقلون عن الإسرا

He came while humankind lay captive, and became their deliverer;

He came while the world was captive, so his deliverance was

by heaven’s light they are carried out of bondage.

With the light of heaven they transmit from captivity

وعفَّى رسوم الكافرين وأهلها

وعفَّى رسوم الكافرين وأهلها

فلا قيصر من بعد ذاك ولا كسرى

فلا قيصر من بعد ذاك ولا كسرى

And he erased the unbelievers’ dwellings and their inhabitants,

He erased the customs of the infidels and their people

so after that there was no Caesar, nor any Khosrow.

So after that there is no Caesar or Chosroes

تقدم كلَّ العالمين إلى مدى

تقدم كلَّ العالمين إلى مدى

تظل به الأوهام طالعة حسرى

تظل به الأوهام طالعة حسرى

He advanced beyond all beings to a point

He surpassed all the worlds to the furthest extent

where imaginations keep ascending, exhausted.

To which imaginations remain rising in longing

وخُصَّ بتشريف على الناس كلهم

وخُصَّ بتشريف على الناس كلهم

ومن لم يقل هذا تقوَّله قسرا

ومن لم يقل هذا تقوَّله قسرا

And he was singled out for honor above all humankind;

And he was privileged over all people

and whoever does not say this will utter it under compulsion.

And whoever does not say this, says it forcibly

ترقى إلى السبع الطباق ترقِّياً

ترقى إلى السبع الطباق ترقِّياً

حقيقاً ولم يعبر سفينا ولا جسرا

حقيقاً ولم يعبر سفينا ولا جسرا

He ascended to the seven layered heavens in an ascent

He ascended to the seven heavens in truth

that was real, crossing by neither ship nor bridge.

Not crossing by ship or bridge

وبالجسم أسرى الله وهو دلالة

وبالجسم أسرى الله وهو دلالة

يمحلّها من لا ييسّر لليسرى

يمحلّها من لا ييسّر لليسرى

And God took him bodily by night—a sign

And bodily he ascended, which indicates

deemed impossible by one not readied for the path of ease.

One who does not facilitate for the facilitator

فسبحان من أسرى إليه بعبده

فسبحان من أسرى إليه بعبده

وبورك في الساري وبورك في المسرى

وبورك في الساري وبورك في المسرى

So glory to Him who took His servant to Himself by night!

So glorified is He who ascended with His servant

And blessed be the night traveler, and blessed be the night journey!

Blessed is the Rider and blessed is the one mounted

وكم عجب أوحى إلى عبده به

وكم عجب أوحى إلى عبده به

فدونك تجميلا ولا تطلب الفسرا

فدونك تجميلا ولا تطلب الفسرا

And how many a marvel He revealed to His servant!

And how wondrous the revelation to His servant through him

So take a brief account, and do not seek the explanation.
