ضَعُواLay فَوقَupon قَلبيmy heart رَاحَةَthe palm الصَّبرِof patience إنَّنيfor I
فَنِيتُI have wasted away وَلَمand did not أنهَضrise بِبسَطٍwith expansion ولاnor قَبضِcontraction
Lay the palm of patience upon my heart, for I
Place upon my heart the comfort of patience, for I
have wasted away, unable to rise in either expansion or contraction.
Am weakened, neither extending nor clenching my hand.
ضِرامُthe blaze الأسَىof sorrow فيin القَلبِthe heart للدَّمعof tears سَأفحٌa shedder
كذاكَlikewise انسكابُthe pouring المُزنِof rain clouds يوجَدُoccurs فيin الرَّمضِscorching heat
The blaze of sorrow in the heart pours forth tears;
The bitterness of sorrow in the heart is a downpour of tears,
so too rain pours from clouds amid scorching heat.
Just as the outpouring of grief brings about blindness.
ضَجِيعايَmy two bedfellows سُهدٌsleeplessness لاnever يَغيبُdeparts ووَحشَةٌand loneliness
وأنَّىand how لمِثليfor one like me بالتَّسلَّيwith solace وبالغُمضِand with sleep
My two bedfellows are sleeplessness that never departs, and loneliness.
My resting place is desolate with no respite,
And how could one like me find solace and sleep?
And how can one like me find solace or sleep?
ضنِيتُI have pined بِحُبٍّwith a love لَيسَdoes not يَعدوكَgo beyond you لحظَةًfor a moment
لأصبحتُI would surely become وَقفاًmotionless لاnot أجِيءُI come ولاnor أمضيI go
I have pined with a love that never strays beyond you for a moment;
I have been weakened by a love that goes no further than you for a moment,
I would surely become motionless, neither coming nor going.
I have become frozen, neither coming nor going.
ضَميريَmy inmost being مَملُوءٌfilled بِحُبِّكَwith love for you وَحدَهُit alone
ولاand no شَكَّdoubt أنَّthat النَّدبَvoluntary observance يُترَكُis set aside للفَرضِfor obligatory duty
My inmost being is filled with love for you alone;
My conscience is filled with love for you alone,
and no doubt voluntary observance is set aside for obligatory duty.
And without doubt, lamenting must be left for duty.
ضَعُفتُI grew weak فقَوانيthen strengthened me التَّعَلُّلُtaking comfort بالمُنىin hopes
وَكَمand how much طَمَعٍhope مَحضٍpure لِذِيfor one possessed of كَرَمٍgenerosity مَحضِpure
I grew weak; then taking comfort in hopes strengthened me.
I have been weakened, so excuses empower me with wishes,
And how much pure hope is placed in one whose generosity is pure!
And how much vain hope for one of pure generosity and pure duty!
ضَنِيتُI have pined بِسرِّيwith my secret عَنbecause of نَواكَyour distance ورُبَّماand sometimes
خَرَجتُI went forth إلىto بَعضٍsome بِسرِّكَwith your secret عَنaway from بَعضِothers
I have pined in secret at your distance, and sometimes
I have been engrossed with my secret from you, and sometimes
I have gone forth with your secret from some to others.
I have disclosed to some your secret from others.
ضَمِنتُI have pledged لَكَto you التَّسليمَsurrender منّيfrom me لأنّنيbecause I
علىin كُلِّevery حالٍstate منكَfrom you راضٍcontent بِماwith whatever تَقضِيyou decree
I have pledged you my surrender, for I
I have promised you complete submission from me because
am content, in every state you send, with whatever you decree.
In any case, I am satisfied with what you decree.
