إنindeed الكبائرmajor sins للطاعاتto acts of obedience مفسدةٌa source of corruption
وإنand indeed أفسَدَهَاthe most corrupting of them للطاعةِto obedience الحسدُenvy
Indeed, major sins corrupt acts of obedience,
Sins corrupt acts of obedience,
and envy is the most damaging of them to obedience.
And the sin that corrupts obedience most is envy.
لاdo not تضمرنَّever harbor علىtoward ذيone possessing نعمةa blessing حسداًenvy
إنَّindeed الحسودthe envious person منfrom الرحمنthe Most Merciful مبتعدfar removed
Never harbor envy toward one who possesses a blessing.
Do not secretly envy one who is blessed,
Indeed, the envious person is far from the Most Merciful.
Indeed, the envious are distant from the Merciful.
واقنعand be content برزقكwith your provision فالأرزاقfor provisions قدalready قُسِمَتhave been apportioned
سيَّانalike فيin الرزقprovision بطَّالٌan idler ومقتصدand a moderate person
And be content with your provision, for provisions have already been apportioned.
Be content with your sustenance, for sustenance is preordained.
The idler and the man of moderation are alike in provision.
Whether spending wastefully or frugally, all have equal sustenance.
فإنso if حسدتyou envy امرأًa person فيماfor what يخصُّis reserved لهfor him
فاذهبthen go فمالكfor you have nothing إلاَّexcept الإِثمُsin والكمدand anguish
So if you envy someone for what is reserved for him,
If you envy a man what is meant for him,
then go—for you have nothing but sin and anguish.
Then go, you have only sin and spite.

A vile disposition and blameworthy aims,
It is an abhorrent trait and reprehensible motives,
and a purpose censured by the voice of sacred law.
And an aim criticized by the tongue of Sacred Law.

You resented a state of prosperity that God had willed;
You disliked a state that God willed its wealth,
so be content with what the One, the Unique, has decreed.
So be content with what the One, the Single has decreed.
