I unraveled the bonds of my patience and bound their opposite fast.

So here I am, in both states, dejected and worn out.

Gaunt, I am tormented by the sight when it appears

at dawn, and the doves sadden me when they sing.

I denied all but him when I knew his reality.

And belief in oneness endures, having wrought annihilation.

My call rises to him every hour,

though I have perceived it with neither glance nor ear.

My day and my night are two gardens through remembrance of him.

So here I am, carried from bliss to bliss.

You went far away; my breast could hold no solace.

You turned away; I could not close an eyelid in slumber.

I moved you from my eyes to my heart out of jealousy,

for you are within me where my soul is—or nearer still.

A glance, if you grant it, is abiding bliss.

And your servant, O my master, awaits permission.

    وقلبي ولا فَخرٌ لهُ اللَّفظُ والمعنى

    Humankind's share in love is a mere word;

but my heart—not to boast—has both the word and the meaning.
