وبرحتand tormented بيme لاno غروwonder التباريحthe torments
I spoke openly of love, since hinting was of no avail.
I confessed my love when hints were unavailing,
And torments racked me—no wonder.
And parted from you though the nights were beguiling.
وماand never ترجمتI expressed أفراحيmy joys لغيركمto anyone other than you
إلاexcept that انثنيتI turned back وللترجيحand in preferring تجريحwounding
I never expressed my joys to anyone other than you
My joys I translate for none but you,
Without turning back; preference brings hurt.
If twisted, for weighing, a wounding refining.
ياO نازحينyou who have gone away وفيand within الأحشاءthe inward parts بعدهمtheir absence
طالhas lasted long النزوحthe absence فدمعso the tears of العينthe eye مطروحshed
O departed ones, whose absence lies within my breast,
O you who departed, yet still stir my heart!
Long has the absence lasted, so the eye's tears fall.
Long has your journey been, long my tears falling.

فبابfor the door of قلبيmy heart لمنto whoever يهواهloves it مفتوحopen
Do not seek leave from an ear set over a heart;
Seek not permission from ears that consent not,
For my heart's door is open to whoever loves it.
For the door of my heart is open to whom I adore.
لمdid not أصغI heed فيكمconcerning you غلىto (apparently إلى) لومblame ولاnor عذلreproach
سيّانalike عنديto me ذاكthat العذلُthe reproach والريحand the wind
I heeded neither blame nor reproach concerning you;
No blame or rebuke in you do I hear,
That reproach and the wind are alike to me.
To me blame and breeze are the same.
ياO لائميyou who blame me فيfor أنينmoaning ليfor me بهthrough it فرجrelief
مهلاًgently فإنfor indeed أنينthe moaning of الحبlove تسبيحglorification of God
O you who blame me for moaning that brings me relief,
O you who reproach me for sorrows I bear
Gently—for love's moaning is praise of God.
Gently, for the moans of love are praise.
إذاwhen رأيتyou see دموعthe tears of العينthe eye هاميةstreaming
فلاthen do not تشكنّever doubt أنthat القلبthe heart مجروحwounded
When you see the eye's tears streaming,
When you see the tears rain down from my eyes
Then never doubt that the heart is wounded.
Think not my heart has been pierced through.

And surely the strangest thing you will hear
Strangest thing you hear though it startles your ears
Is a body in whose torment the spirit delights.
Is a body reveling in what hurts its soul.

وقدand sometimes ينوبstands in عنfor التصريحexplicit speech تلميحa hint
And I was at a loss to answer a questioner—
Ways I have sought to answer its yearning call
And sometimes a hint stands in for plain speech.
When hints may serve better than words can at all.

He rises: “Over what, and why, is the heart distraught,
Rising in me confused, my heart distraught,
And the mind imprisoned, and the tears poured out?”
My mind imprisoned, my tears raining in flood.

A heart where lines of longing are embedded,
A heart where lines of longing lie inscribed,
And a tablet—the writing-board falls short of its breadth.
A tablet whose range no scroll could contain.

قولthe saying of المنزهthe proclaimer of God's transcendence قدوسAll-Holy وسبوحand All-Pure
So I said: What keeps me from revealing it
I said, "I'm forbidden to voice all it has stored"
Is the glorifier's saying: “All-Holy and All-Pure.”
By the Pure and Holy One's refrain.
