    I found the sins of humankind ugly,

    And ugliest of them all is drinking wine.

    وإن لم يكن عقللا فيأساً من الجبر

    For depravity is a fracture, and in reason lies its mending;

    And if there is no reason, then despair of mending.

    What, then, is the state of one when every vice seems beautiful

    To him, and secrecy’s fate lies in disclosure’s grasp?

    He sees the full moon—full moon though it is—in darkness’s hue,

    And hears the words of prohibition in the form of a command.

    And graver than this and all of that

    Is the torment of blazing fire, which no one can endure.
