وينأىand grows distant مزاريmy visit والكتابwhile the letter يزورvisits
I am absent, yet through fidelity I remain present.
I am absent yet still present in spirit through my loyalty,
My visit is far off, yet my letter comes calling.
While my path parts from yours though your memory lingers dear,
وأغدوand I rise at dawn وللتذكارand for remembrance بينbetween جوانحيmy ribs

لهيبa blaze لدمعfor the tears of العينthe eye عنهfrom it صدورan outflow
I rise at dawn; within my breast remembrance has
At dawn, between my ribs, remembrance of you burns
a flame from which the eye's tears spring.
Like a flame, bringing tears raining from my eyes,
وأدعوكand I call to you والأشواقwhile longing تفعلُdoes فعلهاits work
دعاءًa plea لهit has فوقbeyond الخلاصdeliverance عبورa passage
I call to you while longing does its work,
I call upon you though parted, with yearning doing its work,
a plea that passes beyond deliverance.
A prayer rises above all salvation,

شَفَتhave cured دَاءَthe sickness of بَينٍseparation أَحرُفٌletters وسطورُand lines
I console myself with the letter, though seldom
I console myself with your letters, though seldom
have letters and lines cured the sickness of separation.
Can mere lines and words heal the wounds of separation,
وإنيand indeed I وصبريand my patience عنكapart from you فيin النأيseparation ليلةone night
فكيفthen how ليالnights عدةseveral لصبورfor a patient person
I scarcely have patience for a single night away from you;
One night apart has tested my patience,
how, then, could even the patient endure several nights?
So how can I endure many nights of separation?
وكيفand how اصطباريmy endurance عنaway from َسنِيٍّa radiant one سناؤهhis splendor
لانفيfor my nose نَورٌa blossom ولطرفيand for my gaze نورlight
How can I endure being far from a radiant one whose splendor
How can I find patience when the light of your beauty is gone,
is a blossom to my nose and a light to my eyes?
And no ray of light falls upon my eyes?
وماand not كنتwas I ممنone of those who ضيّعneglected الحزمَprudence قبلهاbefore this

I was never one to neglect prudence before this,
I was not one to squander resolve before,
but my prudence falls short before fate.
But my resolve fails before the decree of destiny,

After you—with weariness innate in you—
I bid you farewell though parting weighs heavy on my soul,
can bliss be sweet, or joy complete?
How can joy be sweet or life feel complete?
أبىhas refused اللهGod إلاَّexcept أنكthat you are الفضلexcellence كلهall of it

God has willed it: you are excellence entire,
God willed that you deserve all merit,
even if chests tighten at what I say.

تسيرtravel ومعنىwhile the theme of مَنwhoever سواكis other than you أسيرis captive
How many graceful themes I hold in your praise—
For you have bestowed on me many subtle meanings,
they travel, while a theme of anyone else lies captive.
That walk as your own meaning walks shackled,

If verse could weave all these together,

Jirwal and Muhalhil fall short of them,
Eloquent poets would fall short beside them,
while Akhtal and Jarir follow their pattern.
While Lithe poets and Jarir would aspire to reach them,

For every friend but you gives grounds for reproach,
In anything but you, my words find fault,
and every affection but yours contains falsehood.
While in any love but yours, falsity lurks,

Ah, if only I knew: will I meet you again,
Oh, would that I knew - will we meet again?
so that time, forever unjust, might act justly?
So time that wrongs may be set right?

فإنfor indeed تصاريفthe vicissitudes of القضاءِfate تدورrevolve
No distress comes from God's relief and His kindness;
Still, God's spirit and grace offer comfort,
for the vicissitudes of fate revolve:
For the turns of fate revolve full circle,

Lost hopes may be found, dreams fulfilled,
and after some events, others come to pass.
And after things, other things,

You have changed; the days grow clear and turbid.
You have changed while days can be clear or gloomy,
And who goes far away without changing?
And who is there that does not change?

You have treated with forgetfulness a friend whose heart
You blamed one whose heart and words
and speech are remembrance and recollection of you.
Were filled with remembrance and thoughts of you,

He has enfolded for you, as days grow worn, an affection
Time has worn away the love you showed,
so abundant in freshness that it almost drips.
That flowed excessive, as if dripping,

God did not allow me to forget your brotherhood,
even though dwellings and ages have grown distant from us.

And how could one forget his beloved,

The thought of whose face fills my heart and eyes?

When he is absent from my eyes, my inward sight meets him;
When your face leaves my sight, I find it in my mind’s eye,
so one encounter is effaced, and another is pictured.
So one image fades as another takes form,
وماand not زِلتُhave I ceased منof خَطبِthe calamity of التَّفَرُّقِseparation مُشفِقاًbeing fearful

I have always dreaded the calamity of separation,
I feared the misfortune of our parting,
and what I feared of it has indeed befallen me.
And it has befallen me as I dreaded,
فياso, oh ليتwould that سوءَthe misery of البُعدِdistance عنكfrom you مقدمٌwere put first

وياand oh ليتwould that حُسنَthe beauty of القُربِnearness منكto you مؤخرwere deferred
If only the misery of distance from you had come first,
Would that the evil of being far from you had come first,
and if only the beauty of nearness to you had come later!
And the good of being near you had followed after,
وقدand indeed كثرتwere many أيامُthe days of لُقياكَmeeting you قبلهاbefore this

The days of meeting you before this were many,
Many were the days we spent together before,
but the days of separation are more.
But the days of separation have been more,

My yearning has lasted through long nights,
My passion grew in the long nights without you,
because you are far—nights that used to shorten when you were near.
Though when you were near, they seemed to race by,
وقدand indeed أصممتنيhas deafened me عنكto you للبينof separation روعةٌa terror

The terror of parting has deafened me to you,
Your distance has deafened me though awe,
yet the tongue of my condition speaks of you.
Yet the tongue of my state speaks of you,

For in the folds of my breast is a censer for remembering you,
In the folds of my heart, the embers of your memory burn,
and in my words' unfolding is ambergris from your mention.
While the breath of my words is perfumed with your name
