    Has the time not come for a lover's heart to drink its fill?

    The corners of his eyelids overflow, yet he thirsts.

    وقَلبُ الهَوي مَن كانَ قَلبٌ مُرَزَّأ

    An eye struck him, sheathing the blade of his union;

    And the lover's heart, whoever he may be, is a heart sorely afflicted.

    وَكتمُ الهَوى للقَلبِ أنكى وأنكأُ

    I love a beloved whom I do not name, out of awe;

    And concealing love is more grievous and more wounding to the heart.

    I am jealous over him even of my own love—how could I not

    Be jealous over him of others—and how could I recover?

    I spend the night enduring, for his sake, the burning in my breast,

    And between my eyelids is a flow of tears that will not cease.

    I see him with my heart each day and night,

    Though I am driven away from the watering-place of union.

    A letter came to me from him; I gave it its due:

    So here I am, weeping as much as I can, and reading.

    O you whose love has lodged in my hearing and my eye,

    And my heart—so I have no escape or refuge from it.

    فإنّي بيومٍ من لقائِكَ أجزَأُ

    Rescue me with a single day of meeting you;

    For I am content with a day of meeting you.

    ومَن لي بهِ وَهوَ النَّعيمُ المُهَنَّأُ

    I console myself with hopes of union and favor from you;

    And who can secure it for me—that untroubled bliss?
