For you, affection and love are distilled from my heart;
My heart's sincere love and affection are yours
And for your sake, reproach and rebuke are summed up for my soul.
And in you lies the essence of my longing and reproach

I departed from you, while calamities were many;
I left you though partings abound
But separation is an ordeal whose mildest part is hard.
But the pangs of separation are the most difficult of sorrows

Shall I weep for your departure or my heart’s? Indeed,
Shall I weep your companionship or the intention of my heart?
By love’s decree, no heart remains to me after your departure.
By decree of passion, without you I have no heart left
فلاso do not تعتبرهput it to the test بعدafter أعتابكمyour appeasement لهfor it
فبعدfor after انعقادthe conclusion of الصلحpeace لاnot تصلحis fitting الحربwar
So do not put it to the test after you have appeased it;
So do not reproach it after your reproaches
For once peace is concluded, war is unfitting.
For after peace is made, war is no longer valid

If the days bear the guilt of your absence,
If the days are guilty for your absence
It is excuse enough for me that no guilt is mine.
My excuse is that I am not guilty

Examine the caravan’s burns; they disclose their secret:
Examine the wounds of the travelers, they reveal their secret
For outwardly they are a caravan, but inwardly, anguish.
Their exterior is travel but their interior is anguish

Even if the reaches of my land lie far from you,
Though the horizons of my land are far from you
I have no valley in this world but your valley.
I have nothing left in this world but your people, my people

And though long separation may bring weariness,
And if there is weariness in prolonged absence
Yet despite long separation, I am lovesick for you.
With you, I have patience throughout the prolonged absence

It is illness enough for me that your dwellings lie far away,
It is enough of an illness that your homes are demolished
And cure enough for me that they should be near.
And enough of a cure that they become near

I sought through continued letters to strengthen your affection;
But no affection is confirmed without letters
And what good is affection not strengthened by letters?
