Fear and intimacy cannot be reconciled,
Fear and intimacy are not compatible
and love and tears cannot be parted.
And love and tears are not separable

So rein in your claims, for they lead to ruin,
So restrain the claims, for they lead to ruin
even if their unchecked course carries them further in error.
And if insisted upon, they end in misery

Turn back from misleading paths,
And turn back from misguided paths
for paths do not always lead aright.
For the roads do not always give guidance

Do not say, 'I am fearful and trembling,'
Do not say I am frightened or timid
nor, 'I am a lover'; that claim is fabricated.
For that is an absurd saying

Do not presumptuously ride alongside, on race morning,
And do not accompany the ignoramuses early in the morning
the racers, when you are only a worthless straggler.
You who are intelligent and sharp

Keep to your station—helplessness—and be content with it,
And remain in your incapability and be content with it
for earth stays low, however high the horizon rises.
For the ground remains low however high the horizon

For the servant is held low in the noble one's presence,
So the servant is contemptible in the presence of nobility
and the star is effaced when dawn shines.
And the star disappears at the rising of dawn

Your unruly soul called you toward passions,
Your self called you insistently to passions
while your nature aids it, as do delusion and folly.
And nature made it happy, along with delusion and foolishness

You spent the night absorbed in the soul's desires,
And you spent the night in self desires, busy
squandering your time in amusement and scattering yourself.
Wasting your time in play and distraction

Religion, to you, is words you utter,
And religion to you is just words you utter
and action finds no foothold in what you have said.
Without any deed attached to what you have said

Bewilderment, confused notions, and wavering,
Confusion, entanglement and vacillation
heedlessness and claims—all of them folly.
And heedlessness and your claims are all nonsense

You imitate a people with sayings you pilfer,
You have described a group with borrowed words
yet lovers possess a state that cannot be stolen.
Yet the lovers have a state not emulated

So tighten the girdles of resolve to catch up with them,
So strengthen the reins of resolve to catch up with them
for resolve is the finest thing you can gird yourself with.
For resolve is the best thing you can express

Do not soothe yourself with 'I shall': it brings ruin;
And do not procrastinate with “later”, for it is destructive
only ignorance and foolishness have ever approved it.
None were pleased with it except ignorance and torn clothes

You are not behaving confidently
yet you act in it like one who is assured.
While you are acting like those who are confident

Do not unlock a difficulty without earnest striving,
Do not open a problem except with seriousness
for no lock withstands its key.
For locks do not remain on keys that are random

How many groups have raced toward a finish,
And how many have competed for a period
yet victory has been made easy for only a few.
But it only gladdened the competitor for a little while

for there, both living and drowning are martyrdom.
Indeed, in it is life and drowning

How so, while you are tasting sins?

Where is the proof of what you claim?
Through proofs, earnestness and flattery are distinguished.
And proofs distinguish truth and falseness

For in the midday heat, you know neither hunger nor thirst,
For in abandonment, there is no hunger or thirst
and in the deepest darkness, neither vigil nor sleeplessness.
And in desires, there is no restlessness or sleeplessness

None accomplished determination except the wise and perceptive
urged on by two drivers: love and fear.
Driven by the sweetness of love and compassion

seas of death that close over souls.

Wakeful-eyed, deep in thought and taking heed,
The pillow of his eyelids busy in thought and contemplation
neither dawn nor twilight finds him sleeping heavily.
Not overtaken by dawn or dusk in sleep

At night laden with wakefulness, eyelids stained with kohl
tears are his morning draught, tears his evening drink.
With tears lighting the way, with tears clasped tightly

Filled with love; and such is the state of the people of piety

Travelers toward God, whose mounts have not been diverted
A journey to God has not diverted their mounts
by the souls' desires, nor have attachments turned them aside.
From the passions of selves, nor diverted them attachments

And the gnostics, when their knowledge is sound
are silent for God's sake, and speak through God.
To God, whether silent or speaking

barred doors and locks stand before them.
Without which doors and locks would be redundant

In secret, exuding love when they inhale

Joseph knew his brothers after distance

So know your God and act after knowing
that is the root, and this the branch and leaves.
For that is the origin, and this the branch and foliage

Be patient a little, for this dwelling is crumbling,
And be patient a little, for the abode is fleeting
and everyone who lodges here must set out and depart.
And all who resided have departed and moved on

treasure it, for life's last breath lingers only briefly.
Then invest it, for life remains but shortly

That is followed by deficiency, but he did not lack support

yet they agree in loving their worldly life.
But in the passions of the world, they agree
