Since I was a girl, O Abu Al-Abbas
I have hoped for a meeting, yet despaired
Tears for separation drowned me, but
I dried them with the heat of my breath
How fares the one who combs and touches
hair that lies upon him as he stays in Fez?
What I have endured since we parted
is a surging sea of torment and distress
Oh one who guards a cheek with a cheek
who guards the rose’s bloom from harm
And eyelids that learned the art of magic
surpassing the sweetest wine’s charm
Without you here, my state is like
an amputated arm in its sling
