I have given you pure affection, compelled and willing,

And have not addressed you, out of reverence and esteem.

And guarded your hearing from speech I would compel—

Though it is darkness—to lend light to the sun.

And I said: what speech could I deem worthy of him,

When he is foremost in epistles and poetry?

    لذاك يظهر بالأسحار أسحارا

    The noble man hides at dusk some of his reflections;

Thus, in the predawn hours, he reveals enchantments.

He casts forth speech, with none to rival him; and who

Can vie in seafaring with a sea whose waves surge high?

He has spurned the matronly meanings, though they offer themselves

To him, and sent them among the people as virgins.

The pale camels sped with them, swift as birds in flight,

Until I took their saddles for nests.

He brings you effortlessly what would tax the thought of

ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, and clothes Bashshār with sight.

And even if I made my speech an untouched meadow,

And fashioned the letters of my script within it as flowers,

And suppose he judges faults by concealing them

Out of kindness—among people are those who do not conceal disgrace.

And suppose he were—may God preserve his splendor—

Noble: not all people are noble.

My loyalty is enough for him, purified

    Of all taint, openly and in secret;

And that I do not see, among all mankind,

    A friend who equals him in character and standing;

And that his choosing good and doing it

Has left others not a trace of a claim to it.

And indeed I, before seeing him and knowing him,

And afterward, am like a wronged man who has won vengeance.

And a letter from him reached me; he had laden it

With battalions of reproach, advancing and withdrawing.

So I rose to kiss the footprints of the messenger who bore it,

And said, "Welcome, welcome, however he comes!"

And longing called down rain when its seal was broken:

Tears that formed lines upon its lines.

And not a letter of it did I pass while reading

Without yielding precedence, in fairness and acknowledgment.

And I preserved it, after paying it its due

Through listening, amply committing it to memory and repeating it.

And I would have hidden it in my eyelid and my heart,

But I feared water and fire might harm it.
