    When will love's anguish lift from a beholder,

    While his innards blaze amid tears?

    وفي الحُبِّ يَعشَى النَّاظِرُ المتوسِّمُ

    This love's deadly perils are not hidden;

    Yet in love, the discerning beholder's sight grows dim.

    Tears effaced the body's outline, save a remnant,

    Like a line of script that appears, dotted with tears.

    Love's farthest reach only grows more distant,

    Yet my heart, across that distance, does not weary.

    I am a lover of a beloved; if ever I leave him,

    I fall back in fear, while love advances.

    فَقَلبي بِسلُوانٍ بهِ مُتكتَمُ

    He is with me at every moment, whether he departs from me or draws near;

    So my heart keeps its solace in him concealed.

    وأسلَمُ أربابِ القُلوبِ المُسَلِّمُ

    What you desire of my heart is all I desire;

    And safest among those with hearts is he who surrenders.

    ومَن غابَ عَنهُ بَدرُهُ فَهو مُظلِمُ

    I cannot be well if I lose you for an instant;

    And he whose full moon has vanished is in darkness.

    فَيشقى بهِ جِسمي ورُوحي يُنَعَّمُ

    Love's impossibilities are relief and repose within the soul;

    So my body suffers through it, while my soul is granted bliss.

    كَذلكَ هذا الحبُّ شَهدٌ وعَلقَمُ

    My wish is intimate communion, and in it lies my death;

    Such is this love: honey and bitter colocynth.
