ظَمِئتُI thirsted وأَجفانِيwhile my eyelids بدَمعِيَwith my tears فُيَّضُoverflowing
وَعِشتُand I lived وأَضلاعيthough my ribs بِرُوحيَwith my soul فُيَّظُgiving up the spirit
I thirsted while my eyelids overflowed with my tears.
And I lived, though my ribs were giving up my soul.
ظَنَنتُI thought الهَوًَىlove سَهلاًeasy فَلمَّاbut when اخَتَبرتُهُI tested it
رَأيتُI saw المَنَاياdeaths حَولَهُaround it تَتَلمَّظُlicking their lips
I thought love easy, but when I tested it,
I saw deaths around it, licking their lips.
ظُبَاthe blades الحُبِّof love قدalready سَلَّتhave unsheathed عَلَىagainst القَلبِthe heart بِيضَهاtheir gleaming swords
وَحُكمُand the judgment الهَوىof love مُذever since كانَit existed حُكمٌa judgment مُغَلَّظُsevere
Love’s blades have drawn their gleaming swords against the heart.
And love’s judgment has always been a harsh judgment.
ظَفَرتُI attained بِوَصلٍunion لَمdid not يَدُمlast لِيfor me زَمَانُهُits duration
وَيُذهِبُand dispels لَذَّاتِthe pleasures المَنَامِof sleep التَّيَقّظُwakefulness
I won a union whose time with me did not last.
And wakefulness dispels the pleasures of sleep.
ظَهرتُI came forth بِسِرٍّwith a secret فاضَoverflowed دَمعيmy tears بِشَرحِهِin explaining it
وَكمand how many ناطِقٍa speaker حَالاًthrough his state وماyet not يَتَلَفَّظُuttering words
I revealed a secret; my tears overflowed to explain it.
And many speak through their state without uttering a word.
ظَلَلتُI continued أعَانيto suffer فيكfor you ضِدَّينِtwo opposites للهَوَىof love
بِجَفنِيَin my eyelid مُشتٍwintering والفُؤاَدُwhile the heart مُقَبَّظُsummer-scorched (probable reading)
For you, I kept enduring love’s two contrary states:
My eyelid is wintry, while my heart is summer-scorched.
ظعَنتُI departed بِسِرِّيwith my secret عَنfrom سِواكَall but you لأَنَّنيbecause I
رَأيتُكَI saw you as سِرَّthe secret السرِّof the secret مِنfrom حَيثُwhere الحظُI gaze
I withdrew with my secret from all but you, because
I saw you as the secret of the secret wherever I gazed.
ظُنُونيmy thoughts أبَتrefused إلاَّexcept هَواكَlove for you ورُبَّماand at times
عَنِيتُI took pains بِحِفظِto keep السرِّthe secret والسرُّand the secret يُحفَظَis kept
My thoughts refused all but love for you, and at times
I took pains to keep the secret, and the secret is kept.
ظَأرتُI coaxed عَلَىtoward وَعظِthe admonition النَّصِيحof the sincere adviser مَسامِعاًears
لهاthey have ألسُنٌtongues للحَألِof circumstance فيin الحُبِّlove أوعَظُmore admonishing
I coaxed my ears to heed the sincere adviser’s counsel—
They have tongues of circumstance that offer stronger counsel in love.
ظُلِمتُI was wronged بتكليفِby being required التَّحفُّظِto exercise caution فيin الهوَىlove
ومنand whoever رَكِبَrides into الأهوالَterrors لاdoes not يتحفَّظُtake precautions
I was wronged by being required to be cautious in love.
And whoever rides into terrors takes no precautions.
