أعلل نفسي بالتجلد والصبرِ
More anguished than I since you went away; I only
Since you left, my only comforts are endurance and patience,
console myself with fortitude and patience.
Else my sighs are hotter than embers, my eyelids pouring faster than rain.

Otherwise, my sighs are hotter than ghada embers,
I wonder - does your nearness cause distress?
over you, and my eyelids stream more freely than rain.
Alas, between us lies barren wilderness.

If only I knew: will closeness to you return?
Perhaps fate, which parted us,
But how far off! How much wilderness lies between me and you!
Will restore the life we knew, unawares.

Then we’d roam those lowlands, gazing

At gardens gliding by, and rivers.

Then we shall let our gazes roam across those broad valleys,
We’d climb where between two crags prospects open
passing from a lush meadow to a river.
Of pools stretching to the shore from sweet lakes.

And we shall climb; between the two rocks are vistas
We’d scent the breezes of a night
revealing all that lies from the pool to the sea.
Fragrant with herbs and flowers.

And we shall inhale the breeze's cool, moist breaths,
Remembering that, though she and I are parted,
perfumed among the rivulets and blossoms.
The lover must burn with memories.

I remembered her, with separation between me and her,
But my love for you - for through you I loved her -
and whoever yearns must suffer remembrance's anguish.
Has taken root deep in heart and breast.

Indeed, by my love for her—rather, for you, for it
For she was only beautiful because of your beauty,
has taken firm hold between my ribs and breast—
And beauty needs perfume's exhalation.

Rapt, I gaze at the full moon and the slender branch -
and a beautiful woman cannot do without a waft of perfume.
Has a light dawned on that branch to gladden all people?

And go on—now that I have given my longing its due—
Has the moon emerged from behind her clouds?
Look again [reading uncertain] at the full moon and the fresh bough.

And has the full moon's face shone out from her clouds?
