    فَلاَ تَتَّهِمنِي بَعدَ نَشريَ بالطَّيِّ

    My hand is pledged to you in love and contentment;

so do not accuse me of folding away what I have unfolded.

The springs of my eyelids overflow with love

for you, yet I have no way to quench my thirst.

My heart bids me bear its burden—

and who can withstand the pounding and twisting?

The pilgrims offer up their sacrificial animals,

while in my love I have no offering but my heart.

One whose gaze longs for your gathering calls to you

with the cry of an ailing man seeking honey in colocynth.

He jealously guards your secret from others,

though love's secret is known from one's outward appearance.

He dies of anguish and lives on eager hope,

and the beloved is none but one who kills and gives life.

They ask, 'What ails you?' I deny it out of modesty,

yet affirmation may be understood from the form of denial.

This heart's awe of you is many times its love,

so it spreads both its palms toward you, yet feels shy.

It soothes itself with forgetfulness in your absence—

but far from it! No living soul remains in the camp after you.
