The covert of companionship, since your departure, is a wild thicket;
After your company, other friends are worthless.
And the soul's lot is night halts and white camels.
And life's joy is fleeting and transient.

فقلت الآن قد حمى الوطيس
I looked upon my heart the morning I parted from you,
The morning after you left, I saw my conscience
And said, “Now indeed the furnace has grown hot!”
And thought: the time of sorrow is now at hand.

Ah, O pure-hearted friend,
Oh essence of purity! Oh chief of masters!
Ah, O master and chief,
Your sweetness delights, your goodness astounds.

فأنت بذا وذا كأس وكيس
You charm with sweetness and inspire awe with generosity;
You are a goblet and a purse of virtues -
So in this and that, you are a cup and a purse.
For friendship with you, no price is too high.

يهون لكسبه العلق النفيس
I have given you the purest of my love—a love
I gave you my candor and affection,
To win which even precious treasure is a small price.
A treasure for which base coins suffice.

تجاوبني فقد بلغ النسيس
So repay me by answering me; and if you do not
So answer me now, or failing that,
answer me, then my life has reached its last breath.
Answer me later, for this urging suffices.
