ياO نازحاًone far away عنيfrom me ولوand if

أسطيعI am able ماnot فارقتُهُI parted from him
O one far from me—had
O you who left me, even if
I the power, I would not have parted from him—
I could, I would not have left you
ومؤلّفاًand one who gathers together منيfrom me هوىlove
لسواهُfor anyone but him قدalready فرَّقتهI had scattered it
and one who gathered together my love
And one who is made of my love
that I had scattered on others;
I have parted from all but him
ومعلقاًand one who binds أمليmy hope بهto him
منfrom بعدafter ماthat عُلِّقتُهI became attached to him
and one who bound my hope to him
And my hopes hung on him
after I became attached to him.
After I had hung them on you

فتُّI outstripped الغرامpassion وفقتهand surpassed it
God knows that I
God knows that I
have outstripped passion and surpassed it.
Was passionate in love and devoted to it
وجهلتُand I did not know ماwhat فعَلdid الهوىlove
I tasted it
I knew not what love wrought
And I was ignorant of what love would do
in separation until I tasted it.
In separation, until I tasted it
وظننتand I thought أنيthat I شيّقfull of longing
فالآنso now قدindeed حققتهI have confirmed it
And I thought myself full of longing;
And thought I was enduring
now I have truly confirmed it.
But now I have realized it
وملكتand I possessed أنسيmy solace بعدكمafter you
لكننيbut I أعتقتهI set it free
And I possessed my solace after you left,
And I possessed my intimacy after you
but I set it free.
But I have freed it
كمhow many a أورقgray dove جاريتهI raced it
شأوthe course of الأسىsorrow فسبقتهand I outstripped it
How many a gray dove I have raced
How the branches of his affection flourished
along sorrow's course—and outstripped!
The affliction of longing preceded it
ماnot زلتُI ceased أسكبpouring out مدمعيmy tears
I made it speak
I kept pouring out my tears
I continue to shed my tears
until, indeed, I made them speak.
Until I have made them speak
لمdid not ادرِI know إذwhen غَنَّىit sang ونُحتُand I lamented

I knew not, when it sang and I lamented,
I did not know, when he sang and was sculpted
whether it stirred my longing or I stirred its own.
Whether he made me suffer or split me
إنif كانis صبريmy patience بائداًperishing

If my patience is to perish
If my patience was lost
one day, then this is its time.
One day, this would be its time
فالقلبfor the heart قدindeed أحرقتهI have burned it
والجفنand the eyelid قدindeed أغرقتهI have drowned it
For the heart—I have burned it,
For I have burnt the heart
and the eyelid—I have drowned it.
And drowned the eyelids
وبليتand I wasted away غيرexcept for صبابةa scant residue
I made it shimmer
And I have wasted away, save for a remnant
And been troubled without any youthfulness
of tears I set shimmering.
From the flowing tears I have shed
لولاwere it not for رجاءُthe hope of لقائكمmeeting you
منfrom بعدهاafter it لأرقتهI would have poured it out
Were it not for hope of meeting you
If not for hoping to meet you
afterward, I would have poured it out.
After it, I would have kept it sleepless
