Toward the son of Yazīd the Good, my riding-camel passed the night,
At Sawrān, the mounts test her, and she tests them in turn.

The flight of sandgrouse startled at the end of the night.

Women in howdahs from Qays ibn ʿAylān were driven away
By separation—indeed, separation carries a dagger.

They greet one overflowing with bounty, freely giving,
When the gloomy miser bestows no favor.

Then a time of parting returned after that,
And a further bout of separation scattered them far and wide.

And a mail neck-guard whose ample length covers the shoulders,
It belonged to David; its weave was not loose.

Then Dhū Ḥalif, then the meadow—the meadow of Falājah—
Then its valley bends, with copses and tangled thickets of every kind.
