They treated me at the table to maqṭūb,
You serve me at the table a drink
whose taste resembles the loss of a dear companion.
That rivals the taste of the departed beloved

المفرق يبكي من غير ضرب ضيوف
The cup laughs with it, revealing one gray
The cup laughs at it, unblemished
at the hair’s parting, who makes guests weep without a blow.
The parted one cries without beating guests

سيولا من أعين وأنوف
So when it is tasted, a drop of it lets loose
So if I were to taste a drop of it
torrents from eyes and noses.
Floods from eyes and noses

And whenever it makes the diners bend and suffer,
And if the eaters were to pay attention
they treat themselves against it by smelling the loaf.
They would be cured by the scent of bread
