O dwelling, were I tears poured out within you,

I would meet my death, yet not fulfill what was due.

Let your timeworn abode not find my body's wasting strange,

for I have drunk from love's cup what it drank.

Were I to pour my tears according to their due,

I would make a streaming tear-spring flow from every limb.

    فقد غدا لغوادي السحب منتحبا

    I remember your days as a pasture for delights;

now it has become a place where morning rainclouds weep.

Ah, may the brother of the clouds' eyelid water you with rain,

bestowing gifts of meadow blossoms upon the earth's hills,

with lightning like al-Sahib's swords unsheathed,

and a downpour like his gifts when he bestows.

And a band in whom rage burned through the night,

when you raised ranks for me above the necks of eminence.

So I was Yusuf, they the Tribes, and the father of the

Tribes was you; their claim was false blood.

    A dog may bark so long as it has not met a lion of Shara;

but once it sees a lion, it flees.

I see your aims in the weaving of a rhyme,

but I see no aim for myself except eminence.

Turn away from poetry: poetry diminishes

one of high estate; bring glory and noble standing.

For poetry is too short to make one tower above others,

    whether newly devised or improvised.

I journey away from you, yet in every limb I have

a mouth that thanks you with a fluent, flowing tongue.

And who can repel the sun's radiance when it rises?

And who can bar the rain's path when it pours?

I truly love my stay in your shelter, just as

your right hand loves to give among seekers of bounty.

But my tongue longs to journey away from you, so that

it may cover the earth with choice praise of you.

I deem myself, among my kin—and they are all mankind—

a stranger whenever I journey away from your abode.
