  1. ماوية فضية لحمها

    ألذ ما يأكله الآكل

    A silvery water-creature, whose flesh

    is the tastiest thing a diner eats.

  2. يضمها من جلدها جوشن

    مذيل فهو لها شامل

    A coat of mail made of its skin encloses it,

    long-skirted, thus covering it entirely.

  3. فعيشها اللجة ما خيمت

    بها كما يتلفها الساحل

    So its life lies in the deep, as long as it dwells

    there, just as the shore destroys it.

  4. كونت من فضتها عسجدا

    بالقلي لما ضافني نازل

    I fashioned gold from its silver

    by frying it when a guest came to stay with me.
