تناسبا واختلفا في النجر
Bodies of stone, buried in stone;
Bodies of rock buried in rock
The two resembled each other, yet differed in origin.
Matching yet differing in color

تلوح من تحت ثياب خضر
They resemble the front teeth of shy, fair maidens,
Tell tales of past awakenings
Gleaming from beneath green robes.
Glimpsed beneath green robes

Their tips have been daubed with ink,
Their edges imbued with ink
Like pearls weaned from suckling milk.
Like the murky dregs of wine

Gold crouches upon their tails,
I crawl on their dusty tails
As lions crouch on catching sight of a leopard.
Crawling like a lion who’s spied a leopard

They froth—if that is the reading—when unsealed, like a boiling pot,
They gush if the pot boils over
With bubbles like the eyes of narrow-eyed locusts,
With eyes like locusts from Khazar

Or a keen blade through which its watered pattern runs,
Or a sword in which iron flows

Rising and plunging like bright stars falling,
Rising and swooping like a flower
As though night had cleared to reveal dawn.
As if the night cleared for dawn

They show the crowns of their heads as glowing coals,
Their shuddering brows revealed by embers
While all but their heads have been stripped bare.
While all else lies bare

Girdled, but not for a faith of unbelief;
Adorned only with unbelief
Buried, but not because a lifetime has ended,
Tombs whose time cannot run out

Their buried contents raise the dead from the grave;
Their burial revives the dead of the grave

They swear by God almighty

فهي شفاء السكر بعد السكر
That they have suckled none but those weaned from wine.
That they suckled only undiluted wine
So they are a cure for drunkenness after strong drink.
Which cures drunkenness after drunkenness
