من النقس روض ما يغذي بوابل
And a red, plaited one, whose back seems
Her body is like a red rosebud, it seems
a garden of ink, nourished by no downpour.
As though from its softness a garden is nurtured by rains

You see her every day pregnant with embryos,
You see it every day bearing in its womb
prolific in bearing them, untouched by midwives.

So her offspring are either brown and slender
So her children are either dark, withering
within her belly, or white and unsheathed.
In her belly, or else fair and thriving

وترهف منها البيض لا لمقاتل
Brown shafts from her are aimed—not for a warrior;
She raises up the dark ones not for fighting
and white blades from her are honed—not for a fighter.
And nourishes the fair not for battles

So her brown shafts are not accustomed to bearing spearheads,
For neither her dark nor her fair offspring
nor her white blades to bearing sword-belts.
