تَلومُTalum جوديweep freely لِبُرمَةِfor a cooking pot الطَفشيلِthe tafshil stew
وَاِستَهِلّيand weep aloud فَالصَبرُfor patience غَيرُnot جَميلُbeautiful
Talum, weep freely for the pot of tafshil,
And weep aloud, for patience is unbecoming.
فَجَعَتنيbereaved me بِهاof it يَدٌa hand لَمdid not تَدَعleave لِلذَرِّfor the tiny ants
فيin صَحنِthe hollow قِدرِهاits pot مِنany مَقيلِresting place
A hand bereaved me of it, leaving not even the tiny ants
A resting place in the hollow of its pot.
كانَwas وَاللَهِby God لَحمُهاits meat مِنfrom فَصيلٍa weaned camel-calf
رائِعٍsplendid يَرتَعيgrazes on كَريمَchoice البُقولِthe greens
Its meat, by God, came from a weaned camel-calf,
A splendid one that grazed on choice greens.
فَخَلَطناso we mixed بِلَحمِهِwith its meat عَدَسَlentils الشامِal-Sham
إِلىalong with حِمِّصٍchickpeas لَناbelonging to us مَبلولِsoaked
So we mixed lentils from al-Sham with its meat,
Along with our soaked chickpeas.
فَأَتَتناthen it came to us كَأَنَّهاas though it were رَوضَةٌa meadow بِالحَزنِon rugged ground
تَدعوcalling الجيرانَthe neighbors لِلتَطفيلِto freeload at a meal
Then it came to us like a meadow on rugged ground,
Calling the neighbors to freeload.
ثُمَّthen أَكفَأتُI overturned فَوقَهاover it جَفنَةَthe large serving bowl الحَيِّthe clan
وَعَلَّقتُand I hung صَحفَتيmy bowl فيin زَبيلِa woven basket
Then I overturned the clan's large serving bowl over it,
And hung my bowl in a woven basket.
فَمَنىthen destined اللَهُGod ليfor me بِفَظٍّwith a rude fellow غَليظٍbrutish
ماnot أَراهُI think him يُقِرُّprofesses belief بِالتَنزيلِin the Revelation
Then God afflicted me with a rude, brutish fellow,
Who, I think, does not believe in the Revelation.
فَاِنتَحىthen he set to work دائِباًtirelessly يُدَبِّلُmaking huge mouthfuls مِنهاfrom it
قُلتُI said إِنَّindeed الثَريدَtharid (bread soaked in broth) لِلتَدبيلِfor making huge mouthfuls
Then he set to work, tirelessly taking huge mouthfuls from it.
I said, 'Tharid is indeed meant for huge mouthfuls.'
فَتَغَنّىthen he sang صَوتاًa song لِيوضِحَto make clear عِنديto me
حَيِّgreet أُمَّUmm (mother of) العَلاءِal-Ala قَبلَbefore الرَحيلِdeparture
Then he sang a song to make it clear to me:
'Greet Umm al-Ala before departure.'
