    Whenever I say, 'Now is the time to forget,' I am stirred

    by the east wind's breeze from where the dawn breaks.

    And at the thought of you, a spell of weakness surely overtakes me,

    as a sparrow shakes itself when the rain has soaked it.

    وزُرْتُك حتى قيل ليس له صبر

    I kept away from you until it was said, 'He knows no love';

    and I visited you until it was said, 'He has no patience.'

    You spoke truly: I am the lovesick one, afflicted

    by the torments of love that has possessed the heart—or by sorcery.

    Indeed, by Him who brings tears and laughter, and who

    brings death and life, and whose command is supreme:

    she has indeed left me envying wild creatures, for I see

    two loving mates among them, untroubled by alarm.

    So, O estrangement from Layla, you have brought me to the limit,

    and gone beyond anything estrangement had ever reached.

    ويا سَلوةَ الأيّامِ مَوْعِدُكِ الحَشْر

    And O love of her, increase my anguish for a night;

    and O solace of days, your appointed time is the Resurrection.

    فلمّا انقضى ما بينَنا سكن الدهر

    I marvelled at Time's efforts to come between me and her;

    but when what was between us ended, Time grew still.

    And indeed I come to her, intent on forsaking her

    for good, till the end of time, as long as dawn breaks.

    Yet I have only to see her unexpectedly,

    and I am dumbfounded, with neither recognition nor denial in me.

    My hand almost grows dewy when I touch her,

    and green leaves sprout at its fingertips.
