دَنَتْdrew near فَاسْتَقَلّتْthen rose aloft تالياتُthe trailing ones الكواكبthe stars
Indeed, a vision of Dawud stirred me, after
The last stars had drawn near, then risen aloft.

And despair’s stupor, without solace, brings no
Relief from the sickness that overpowers me.

And with you—if your shade could live and we could meet—
Lies healing for the one you left on the day of al-Tanadib.

Have you, then, a remedy to help me with a love
That maddens me between my entrails and my breastbones?

And were I not certain that death is but a decree
From God, until they are raised for the reckoning,

I would say to him, as I visit his grave,
"Will you be with me tomorrow, and be my companion?"

I asked my King, when He tried me with his loss,
For death at the Romans’ hands amid the cavalry squadrons.

They turned me back, though I had already taken my vengeance in advance with a thrust
Seething with a surging torrent, croaking of death.

Before I have fought the enemy with spears, in voluntary devotion
To God, seeking His bounty, and exchanged sword-blows.
