منwho ليfor me بردwith the return of الصباyouth واللهوand amusement والغزلand courtship
هيهاتfar beyond reach ماwhat فاتhas passed منof أيامكyour days الأولearliest
Who will bring back youth, pleasure, and love to me?
Who will bring me back the breeze of youth, the joy and romance?
Beyond recall is what has passed of your earliest days.
Alas! The early days are gone, never to return.
طوىfolded away الجديدانnight and day ماwhat قدindeed كنتI used to انشرهspread it out
وأنكرتنيand no longer recognize me ذواتwomen possessing العينeyes النجلwide
Night and day have folded away what I once spread out,
The two beloved ones folded what I had unfolded,
And wide-eyed women no longer recognize me.
And those with languid eyes disowned me.
وقدand already نهانيrestrained me النهىreason عنهاfrom them وأدبنيand disciplined me

فلستso I am not أبكيweeping علىover رسمa campsite's trace ولاnor ظللshelters
And reason has already kept me from them and disciplined me,
Propriety has forbidden me their love and taught me manners,
So I weep over neither a campsite's traces nor its shelters.
So I do not weep for a phantom or mirage.
ماليwhat have I to do وللدمنةand with the ruined campsite البوغاءdust-covered أنبهاI lament it (uncertain reading)
وللمنازلand with the dwellings منat خوفKhawf ومنand at مللMalal
What have I to do with dusty ruins, lamenting them,
What business have I with the howling wilderness,
Or with the dwellings at Khawf and Malal?
Or with dwellings that inspire fear and boredom?
متىwhen ينالattains الفتىthe young man اليقظانvigilant همتهhis ambition
إذاif المقامone's stay بدارin the abode of اللهوىdiversion والغزلand courtship
When can a vigilant young man attain his ambition,
When will the vigilant youth attain his quest,
If he dwells in the house of diversion and love?
If he lingers in the abode of mirth and love?
فيamong الخيلhorses والخافقاتand fluttering banners السودblack ليfor me شغلwork
ليسis not الصبابةardent longing والصهباءand tawny wine منamong شغليmy concerns
Among horses and fluttering black banners lies my work;
My occupation is with steeds and swaying saddles,
Lovesickness and tawny wine are not my concern.
Not with youthful folly or graying hair.
ماnot كانwas ليfor me أملany hope فيfor غيرanything other than مكرمةa noble deed
والنفسand the soul مقرونةٌbound بالحرصto eagerness والأملand hope
I have never hoped for anything but noble deeds,
I have no hope apart from generous deeds,
And the soul is bound to eagerness and hope.
While my soul is tied to greed and hope.
ذنبيmy offense إلىagainst الخيلthe cavalry كريmy charging فيinto جوانبهاits flanks
إذاwhen مشىwalks الليثthe lion فيهاamong them مشيwith the gait of مختبلone deranged
My offense against the cavalry is my charge into its flanks,
My sin against horses is that I pass my life among them,
When the lion walks among them with a madman's gait.
When the lion walks among them with a swaying gait.
وليand mine is منof الفيلقthe army الجأواءdark with armor غمرتهاits engulfing depths
إذاwhen تقحمهاplunge into it الأبطالthe champions بالحيلby stratagems
And mine are the engulfing depths of the dark-armored host,
And I have floods of horsemen whose torrents
When champions plunge into them by stratagems.
Are driven by heroes with cunning and skill.

How many a rugged flank have I confronted at dawn,
How many rough, coarse hillsides has it made smooth,
With a cloud of death, pouring in torrents!
Colliding with death in bared tusks!

And many a battle-flood have I waded through, its heights and depths,
And how many waves has it stirred up, above and below,
With blows and thrusts, amid bright swords and spears.
With blows and stabs amid the white swords and brown spears!
سلask الجرادةal-Jarada عنيabout me يومon the day تحملنيshe carries me
هلhas فاتنيescaped me بطلa champion أوor خمتhave I shrunk back عنfrom بطلa champion
Ask al-Jarada about me, on the day she carries me:
Ask the locust about me on the day I carry it
Has any champion escaped me, or have I shrunk from a champion?
Whether I missed a hero or avoided a hero.

وهلand have فزعتI sought aid إلىfrom غيرanything other than القناspears الذبلslender
And has any front-runner outstripped me in reaching the goals?
Whether my racing steeds outstripped the rest toward the goals,
And have I sought aid from anything but slender spears?
Or whether I shrank from anything but a worn bridle strap.

ألستam I not أولاهمthe worthiest of them بالقولin word والعملand deed
Why do I see those under my protection calling down my blood?
Why do they seek to shed my blood with their sharp swords?
Am I not the worthiest of them in word and deed?
Am I not the first to help them in word and deed?

طلائعadvance guards الموتof death فيin أنيابهhis fangs العصلcurved
How can one reach a tawny, hulking lion,
How can I attain the flowers of Khabaithan,
With death's vanguard in his curved fangs?
The vanguards of death with snarling jaws?
وماand what يريدونdo they want لولاwere it not for الحينdoom منfrom أسدa lion

And, were it not for doom, what would they want with a lion
They want nothing but the instant from a roaring lion,
Cloaked in night, his eyes lined with embers?
At night wrapped in glowing embers, eyelids darkened,
لاnot يشربhe drinks الماءwater إلاexcept منfrom قليبa well of دمblood
ولاand not يبيتspends the night لهof his جارa neighbor علىin وجلfear
He drinks water only from a well of blood,
Who drinks no water but from the well of blood,
Yet no neighbor of his spends the night in fear.
And has no neighbor dwelling near him in fear.
لولاwere it not for الإمامthe imam ولولاand were it not for حقthe duty of طاعتهobedience to him
لقدsurely شربتI would have drunk دماblood أحلىsweeter منthan العسلhoney
Were it not for the imam and the duty to obey him,
But for my leader and my duty to obey him,
I would surely have drunk blood sweeter than honey.
I would have drunk a sweeter draught than honey.
