Trust in my noble patience in the face of time,
Trust my patience with the days
but do not trust in my patience with separation.
And do not trust my patience without you

After fifty years, my heart was struck
After fifty arguments, eyes of doe
by the eyes of dust-colored gazelles in the barren land.
In desolate lands have captured my heart

Nor do I gaze toward the side of wealth
I do not envy the wealthy
when high honor lies on the side of poverty.
If glory comes from poverty

But I am bitter in enmity, one who leaves foes bereaved,
But I have endured much enmity
guilty of many offenses in verse and with brown spears.
Many sins of poetry and black marks

With them I struck the pillars of Qays ibn Jahdar,
I have aimed them at Qais ibn Jodhair
and shattered them—I, the mightiest of stone-hurling catapults.
And knocked them down, hurling rocks

And al-Ghaw'i did no wrong; rather, I am the wrongdoer.
I have not wronged the weakling
And could a waterbird's chick ever stand against a falcon?
Can a waterfowl stand still for the falcon?

Ah, I weep for poetry only because
I cry for poetry, that now
I see every bat jostling for a place in poetry.

And before him lie a sea and a night that enfolds it—
With endless seas and nights around
so what does he think of night amid the deep sea?
What can it know of seas in tumult?

Keep back, keep back from Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib,
To you, to you, about Lu'ay ibn Ghalib
for Lu'ayy does not sleep on an unavenged wrong.
For Lu'ay does not rest on the lute

فإنfor indeed المناياdeaths بينbetween أنيابهاits fangs الخضرgreen
Leave the tongue-flicking serpent; do not provoke it,
Leave the hissing serpent be
for deaths lurk between its green fangs.
Death lurks within its green fangs
