ولولا معد وأيامها

ولولا معد وأيامها

وأنهم السنخ والمنصل

وأنهم السنخ والمنصل

And were it not for Maʿadd and its days,

And were it not for Ma'add and its days

and for their being the root and the sword,

And that they are ancient and polished

لضاق الفضاء على أهله

لضاق الفضاء على أهله

ولم يك ناس ولا منزل

ولم يك ناس ولا منزل

the open expanse would have grown cramped for its inhabitants,

The space would have tightened on its people

and there would have been neither people nor a dwelling;

And there would have been neither people nor dwellings

وزلزلت الأرض زلزالها

وزلزلت الأرض زلزالها

وأدخل في امه دعهل

وأدخل في امه دعهل

and the earth would have been shaken with its shaking,

And the earth would have shaken its shakes

and Daʿhal would have been thrust into his mother.

And confusion would have entered its entrails
