وشاعرٍand a poet أنشدَrecited شِعراًa poem لهof his own
وشاعرٍ أنشدَ شِعراً له
ينقضcontradicts فيin آخرهits ending أوّلَهْits beginning
ينقض في آخره أوّلَهْ
And a poet recited a poem of his own
whose ending contradicted its beginning.
عاتبتُهI reproached him فيهabout it فلمbut did not يكترثْcare
عاتبتُه فيه فلم يكترثْ
وبالذيand about what استبعدْتُهI found implausible أوّلهْits beginning
وبالذي استبعدْتُه أوّلهْ
I reproached him for it, but he paid no heed
to what I found implausible in its opening.
فدلّنيso it showed me ذاكَthat علىthat أنّهhe was
فدلّني ذاكَ على أنّه
ذوpossessed of خَبَلderangement فيin عقلهhis mind أوْor وَلَهْlove-madness
ذو خَبَل في عقله أوْ وَلَهْ
That showed me that he was
unsound in mind, or mad with love.
