بَينَbetween القَوائِمِal-Qawāʾim مِنof رَهطٍRahṭ فَأَلبانِand Albān
O dwelling I recognize, whose campsites lie desolate,
O home, though now a desolate abode
between al-Qawāʾim of Rahṭ and Albān,
With pillars midst a tribe that's passed away,
فَدِمنَةٍthen a ruined campsite بِزُخَيّاتِat Zukhayyāt الأَحَثِّal-Aḥathth إِلىto
ضَوجَيthe two bends of دُفاقٍDufāq كَسَحقِlike threadbare cloth المَلبَسِthe garment الفانيworn-out
then a ruined campsite at Zukhayyāt al-Aḥathth, stretching to
A hut with tattered curtains blowing free,
the two bends of Dufāq, like the threadbare cloth of a worn-out garment.
A roofless lair where sands drift and decay;
ماnot إِنreinforces the negation رَأَيتُI have seen وَصَرفُand the vicissitudes of الدَهرِtime ذوfull of عَجَبٍwonder
كَاليَومِlike today هَزَّةَa swaying أَجمالٍcamels بِأَظعانٍwith women in litters
Never have I seen—and time’s vicissitudes are full of wonder—
I've never known the whims of fate so strange
such a swaying of camels bearing women in litters as today:
As now when ruins mock grandeur's decay,
صَفّاًin a row جَوانِحَleaning بَينَbetween التَوأَماتِal-Tawʾamāt كَماjust as
صَفَّlined up الوُقوعَalighting حَمامُdoves المَشرَبِthe watering place الحانيbowing
in a row, leaning between al-Tawʾamāt, just as
Where dove-hued feathered flocks in lines arrange
the bowing doves at the watering place line up as they alight.
Like pigeons at a well-worn fountain's spray.
ياO وَيكَwoe to you عَمّارُʿAmmār لِمwhy تَدعوyou call لِتَقتُلَنيso that you may kill me
وَقَدand indeed أُجيبُI answer إِذاwhenever يَدعونَthey call أَقرانيmy equals
O—woe to you, ʿAmmār! Why call me out to kill me,
O builder, why invite me to my death
when I do answer whenever my equals call?
When comrades call, you know I can't say nay,
وَالقَومَand the men أَعلَمُknow best هَلwhether أَرميI shoot وَراءَهُمbehind them
إِذwhen لاnot يُقاتِلُfights مِنهُمof them غَيرُother than خُصّانِthe chosen few
And the men know best whether I shoot from behind them,
My people know I never shun the fray
when none of them fights except a chosen few,
When warriors true unsheathe the sword for Faith.
فَإِذthen when عارَتِflew النَبلُthe arrows وَاِلتَفَّand became entangled اللُفوفُthe massed troops وَإِذand when

and when arrows fly and the massed troops become entangled, and when
When shafts prove vain and ranks in shambles lie,
they draw the swords, bare after being sheathed,
Only the valiant face the enemy.

In life, the wise may err, fools stumble right,
blaze, except armored warriors who are no cowards.
New things surprise us every coming day.
إِنَّindeed الرَشادَright guidance وَإِنَّand indeed الغَيَّerror فيin قَرَنٍone tether
بِكُلِّwith all of ذَلِكَthat يَأتيكَcome to you الجَديدانِthe ever-new pair: night and day
Indeed, right guidance and error are bound by one tether;
Trust no refuge, though in Mecca's site,
the ever-new pair, night and day, bring you all of that.
Death lingers near each living body's way.
لاdo not تَأمَنَنَّever feel safe وَلَوand even if أَصبَحتَyou wake فيin حَرَمٍa sanctuary
إِنَّindeed المَناياthe fates of death بِجَنبَيat both sides of كُلِّevery إِنسانِperson
Never feel safe, even if you wake within a sanctuary;
Dread no doom if you're resolved to die,
for death stands on either side of every person.
Postponed the day for those reprieved to stay.
وَلاand do not تَهابَنَّever be afraid إِنif يَمَّمتَyou head toward مَهلَكَةًa deadly place
إِنَّindeed المُزَحزَحَthe one kept far away عَنهُfrom it يَومُهُhis day دانيnear
And never fear if you head into mortal danger;
Vow naught until you see what time holds true,
for even one kept far from it has his day drawing near.
Events may thwart what you intend today.
وَلاand do not تَقولَنْever say لِشَيءٍof anything سَوفَshall أَفعَلُهُI do it
حَتّىuntil تَبَيَّنَyou discern ماwhat يَمنيallots لَكَfor you المانيthe Apportioner
And never say of anything, ‘I shall do it,’
until you discern what the Apportioner allots you.
