وَتسأَلُنيand asks me for بَعدَafter هَدءٍa quiet interval فِراقاseparation
Kabishah, my wife, wishes for divorce,
My bride wished for divorce
And after a quiet interval asks me for separation.
And asked me for separation after calm
وَقامَتand she stood تُريكَshowing you غداةَon the morning of الرَحيلِdeparture
كَشحاًa waist لَطيفاًslender وَفَخِذاًand a thigh وَساقاand a calf
And on departure's morning she stood, showing you
She stood to show you in the morning of departure
A slender waist, a thigh, and a calf;
Slender shins, thighs and legs
ومنسَدِلاًand flowing hair كمثانيlike the coils of الحِبالِropes
تُوسِعُهshe lavishes on it زَنَبقاًjasmine oil أَوor خِلاقاfragrant ointment
And flowing hair like coils of rope,
With dangling bracelets that widen
Which she lavishes with jasmine oil or fragrant ointment;
With a flower or bangle

And a sweet-tasting mouth, like daisies
Sweet to taste like ripe fruits
Which spring rain drenched on the sandy, stony tracts.
Upon which spring poured its bounty

My wife asks me, 'Have you met
She asked about my longing - did you find
Qabus when you came to Iraq?'
Kabus on your trip to Iraq?
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her قَدindeed لَقيتُI met الهُمامَthe noble hero

So I told her, 'I have met the noble hero,
I said I met the heroes
Going forth with the army in full march.
Setting out on Thursday hastened

He leads the steeds to the enemy's land;
Driving the steeds to enemy land
The horses have already become shaggy and lean:
The horses kicking up motes of dust

Lanky, stripped bare, shuffling,
Litters put aside for the companions
Ahead of the companies, leading the companies.
The maidens lead the maidens

In scattered bands, they bound like gazelles;
Treading heavily like gazelles
They left no pregnancy in any belly.
Leaving no young in the valley unstartled
فَحيَّيتُهso I greeted him إِذwhen رأَيتُI saw الجموعَthe hosts

So I greeted him when I saw the hosts
I greeted him when I saw the crowds
Gleaming, drawing alongside him on the right.
Press to swear him allegiance on the right

Massive in shoulders and both forearms,
Shoulder bones and arms
The horses part from him, parting wide.
Scattering the horses in separation

And God said to him, 'Give and bestow,'
God said to him “Give and grant”
And glory sold itself to him in a binding bargain.
And glory sold to him freely

And no lion among the lions of the den,
No lion from the lions of the den
Clasping those who seek it in its embrace,
Embraces seekers more boldly than he

Is braver than he against a formidable warrior,
No one more daring in resolve
Or bolder than he, in plain truth.
Or quicker to loyalty and friendship

Nor is the sea, its deep waters surging,
The sea with its great waves
More lavish than he in spending wealth.
Is not more generous with wealth

O friend, do you see the lightning? Never dimming,
My friend, see how the lightning did not wink
Its night-visiting flashes blaze brilliantly.
Its flickers flashing and meeting
يُضيءُit lights حَبيّاًa massed cloud دناhas drawn near بَركُهُits breast

It lights a massed cloud whose breast hangs low;
Lighting up a beloved near, its rain pouring
It stays a moment and journeys a moment.
Maintaining surges and spreading surges

It watered Waridat, then the hills of ar-Ridah,
Watering the plains, hooves pawing
Then burst wide open above al-Ghabit.
Kicking up above the meadow kicked up dust

Then, when it descended from its backbone
When he descended from his foal
And touched the earth's fine dust,
And touched earth’s fine motes

The east wind milked it, and the south wind assailed it,
The breeze greeted him and the south wind caressed him
Driving thin, rainless clouds away from it.
Shaking the dust off him in layers

Then it laid its breast upon Aja,
He cast his forelock on his shoulder
As though hobbles lay on its two upper forelegs.
As if it were a companion on his arm

It topples the thorn trees onto their chins,
Bending his neck to his cheek
As a prized camel-stallion topples milk-dripping milch camels.
Like a Phoenix chick greeting with opened beak

For three nights and their days,
For three nights and their days
Water pours from it in torrents.
Water streamed from him pouring

And it cast its rain-load into its lowlands,
He tossed his tail in its meadows
Then lifted what lay around it and recovered.
Lifting what its dust had lowered

I watered with it the two mountains of Tayy,
I watered my mount Tayyi’ with it
And watered neither Syria nor Iraq with it.
And did not water Damascus or Iraq with it

But with it I watered a land
Rather, I watered a town
That vies with Ma'add in loftiness on our behalf.
Whose minaret rivals ours in height

So word has not reached it that we are a people
They did not expect us to be a people
Who have reached the goal and claimed the lead.
Who roamed far and controlled the lead

And we cut off the nose of boasting pride
We break the nose of the arrogant
When bows darken the tent-canopy.
If the spindly one frowns in the hallway

And, in defiance of proud noses, we overran
We claimed through scowling noses
Asad's preserve at al-Khuwayy, trampling it down.
The protected domain of the lion with defiance

We struck them at al-Liwa with a crushing blow
We raided them with blades in a raid
That made them drink a brimming cup of death.
That gave them from death a bitter cup to drink

After it the sons of Asad
Watch deceptive lightning at Shi'fayn.
Walk with limps like lightning’s zigzag
