Eyelined with kohl
Veiled in coquetry,
Veiled with coquetry
مُعَصْفَرُsafflower-dyed التُّفّاحِthe apples فيin
مُعَصْفَرُ التُّفّاحِ في
خَدِa cheek مَليحِlovely الضَّرَجِthe crimson flush
خَدِ مَليحِ الضَّرَجِ
With safflower-tinted apples in
Apple-cheeked
A cheek of lovely crimson.
In a pretty, smooth cheek
جَمَّشَهُcaressed him الشَّعْرُthe hair وماand not
جَمَّشَهُ الشَّعْرُ وما
ذاكَthat لِطولِbecause of the length of الحُجَجِthe years
ذاكَ لِطولِ الحُجَجِ
Hair has caressed him, though not
His hair is tousled not
Because he is advanced in years;
From long separation
وإِنَّماbut rather عَارِضُهُhis cheek-down
وإِنَّما عَارِضُهُ
شَنَّفَهُadorned him with earrings بالسَّبَجِwith jet
شَنَّفَهُ بالسَّبَجِ
Rather, his cheek-down
But his cheek is marked
Has hung jet earrings upon him.
