وقَلْعَةٍand a fortress عَانَقَembraced العُيُّوقُCapella سَافِلَهاits base
وقَلْعَةٍ عَانَقَ العُيُّوقُ سَافِلَها
وجَازَand passed beyond مَنْطِقَةَthe belt of الجَوْزاOrion أَعالِيهاits heights
وجَازَ مَنْطِقَةَ الجَوْزا أَعالِيها
And a fortress whose base Capella embraced,
and whose heights passed beyond Orion’s belt.
لاnot تَعْرِفُknows القَطْرَrain إِذْsince كَانwas الغَمامُthe clouds لَهاfor it
لا تَعْرِفُ القَطْرَ إِذْ كَان الغَمامُ لَها
أَرْضاًground تَوَطّأُtread قطريهits two sides مَواشيهاits livestock
أَرْضاً تَوَطّأُ قطريه مَواشيها
She knows no rain, for the clouds are to her
a ground whose two sides her livestock tread.
إِذاwhen الغَمامَةُa cloud لاحَتْappears خاضَwades ساكِنُهاits inhabitant
إِذا الغَمامَةُ لاحَتْ خاضَ ساكِنُها
حِياضَهاits pools قَبْلَbefore أَنْthat تَهْمىpour down عَزالِيهاits spouts
حِياضَها قَبْلَ أَنْ تَهْمى عَزالِيها
When a cloud appears, her inhabitant wades
through its pools before its spouts pour down.
يُعَدُّwould be counted مِنْamong أَنْجُمِthe stars of الأَفْلاكِthe celestial spheres مَرقَبُهاits watchtower
يُعَدُّ مِنْ أَنْجُمِ الأَفْلاكِ مَرقَبُها
لَوْif أَنَّهُthat it كانَwere يَجْريmoving فيin مَجاريهاtheir courses
لَوْ أَنَّهُ كانَ يَجْري في مَجاريها
Her watchtower would be counted among the stars of the spheres,
if it moved along their courses.
عَلىon ذُرىًthe peaks of شامِخٍa lofty mountain وعرٍrugged قَدindeed امْتَلأَتْhas become filled
عَلى ذُرىً شامِخٍ وعرٍ قَد امْتَلأَتْ
كِبْراًwith pride بِهِin it وهوwhile it مَمْلوءٌfilled بِهاbecause of it تِيهاwith conceit
كِبْراً بِهِ وهو مَمْلوءٌ بِها تِيها
On a lofty, rugged mountain’s peaks, she is filled
with pride in it, while it is filled with pride in her.
لَهُit has عقابٌsteep mountain passes عقابeagles of الجَوّthe sky حَائِمةٌcircling
لَهُ عقابٌ عقاب الجَوّ حَائِمةٌ
مِنْfrom دونِهاbeneath them فَهيَso they تَخْفَىare hidden فيin خَوافيهاtheir hidden recesses
مِنْ دونِها فَهيَ تَخْفَى في خَوافيها
The mountain has steep passes; eagles of the sky circle
beneath them, hidden in their recesses.
ردتrepelled مَكايِدthe stratagems of أَمْلاكٍkings مَكايِدهاits stratagems
ردت مَكايِد أَمْلاكٍ مَكايِدها
وقَصَّرَتْand made fall short بِدَواهِيهِمْtheir wiles دَواهيهاits wiles
وقَصَّرَتْ بِدَواهِيهِمْ دَواهيها
Her stratagems repelled the stratagems of kings,
and her wiles made their wiles fall short.
أَوْطَأَتْbrought underfoot هِمَّتكَyour resolve العَلْياءَlofty هامَتَهاits crown
أَوْطَأَتْ هِمَّتكَ العَلْياءَ هامَتَها
لَماwhen جَعَلْتَyou made العَواليthe lances مِنْamong مَراقيهاits steps of ascent
لَما جَعَلْتَ العَوالي مِنْ مَراقيها
Your lofty resolve brought her crown underfoot,
when you made lances steps for scaling her.
ولمand did not تَقِسْcompare بِكَwith you خَلْقاًany creature فيin البَريَّةِcreation إِذْwhen
ولم تَقِسْ بِكَ خَلْقاً في البَريَّةِ إِذْ
رَأَتْit saw قُسِيَّthe bows of الرَّدىdeath فيin كَفِthe hand of باريهاtheir maker
رَأَتْ قُسِيَّ الرَّدى في كَفِ باريها
Nor did she deem any creature in creation your equal, when
she saw the bows of death in the hand of their maker.
