على فتاها وعلى خطيبها
When Saʿd sets out in the morning to its Shabīb,
When the morning sun begins to shine
to its young champion and its orator,
Upon her youth, her lover, her heart's delight
منfrom مطلعthe rising of الشمسthe sun إلىto مغيبهاits setting
من مطلع الشمس إلى مغيبها
عجبتَyou marvel منat كثرتهاits great numbers وطيبهاand its excellence
عجبتَ من كثرتها وطيبها
from the sun’s rising to its setting,
Until the sunset glow fades into night
you marvel at its numbers and its excellence.
