O goat of lice and home of disgrace

We spent the night, and the mule spent it in the stable.

We spent the night while the mule spent it in the stable

وبات شيطان القوافي يملى

وبات شيطان القوافي يملى

على امرئ فحل وغير فحل

على امرئ فحل وغير فحل

And the demon of rhymes spent the night dictating

And the demon of rhymes spent it dictating

to a man—a stallion, yet no stallion.

To a virile and unvirile man

لا خير في علمي ولا في جهلي

لا خير في علمي ولا في جهلي

لو كان يدري ماعز بنخلي

لو كان يدري ماعز بنخلي

There is no good in my knowledge, nor in my ignorance.

There is no good in my knowledge or in my ignorance

If only Maʿiz knew of my palm trees!

If the goat knew about our palm trees

ما زال يقليني وتميمي يغلي

ما زال يقليني وتميمي يغلي

حتى اذا القيم رمى بالجفل

حتى اذا القيم رمى بالجفل

He kept hating me, while my Tamimi boiled,

He would continue to roast me while my worries boil

until, when the keeper cast down the sweepings,

Until when the guard threw with pebbles

طبّقت تطبيق الجراز النصل

طبّقت تطبيق الجراز النصل

I struck home as a keen sword-blade strikes.

I applied myself like a sharpened cleaver
