  1. ولولا خُلّةٌ سبقت اليه

    وأخوٌ كان من عرق المدام

    Were it not for an earlier friendship with him,

    and a brotherly bond rooted in wine,

  2. دلفت له بابيض مشرفّيَ

    كما يدنو المصافح بالسلام

    I would have advanced upon him with a gleaming Mashrafi sword,

    as one offering a handshake draws near in greeting.
