By my life, if al-Junayd’s riders have set out
By my life! If the cavalry of Junayd rode off
for Syria from Marr, and his riding camels have departed,
To Syria from Merr, though their steeds sped,
لقدindeed غادرleft الركبthe riders الشامونbound for Syria خلفهمbehind them
فتىًa youth غطفانياof Ghatafan يُعللis tended جانبُهhis side
the Syria-bound riders have indeed left behind them
The caravan left behind in Syria
a youth of Ghatafan, whose side is tended;
A Ghassanid youth nursing his side,
فتىa youth كانused to يسرىmarch by night للعدوagainst the enemy كأنماas though

a youth who would march by night against the enemy, as though
A youth who would attack the foe as though
his battalions each day were flocks of sandgrouse.
The waving branches of Qatta sway daily,
وكانand it was كأنas though البدرthe full moon تحتbeneath لوائهhis banner
اذاwhenever راحhe went forth فيamid جيشan army وراحتand went forth عصائبهhis war bands
And it was as though the full moon were beneath his banner
And who was like the full moon beneath his banner
whenever he went forth amid an army and his war bands went forth.
When he marched with an army and standards fluttered.
