شاهدbeheld مالاًan estate ربُّan owner of مالwealth فساسهthen tended it
شاهد مالاً ربُّ مال فساسه
سياسةthe stewardship of شهمa noble man حازمresolute وابنand son of حازمa resolute man
سياسة شهم حازم وابن حازم
A man of wealth beheld an estate and tended it
A lord of wealth was seen possessing wealth,
With the stewardship of a noble, resolute man, son of a resolute man.

اقامhe stayed بهاin it العصرينmorning and evening حيناًfor a time ولمand did not يكنbe
اقام بها العصرين حيناً ولم يكن
كمنlike one who ضنَّwas miserly عنtoward عمرانهاits cultivation بالدراهمwith dirhams
كمن ضنَّ عن عمرانها بالدراهم
He stayed there morning and evening for a time, and was not
He stayed there for two eras for a while, and he was not
Like one who begrudged dirhams for its cultivation.
Like one who was stingy about developing it with dirhams.
كأنas though نقيضthe creaking of الليفthe palm fiber عنfrom سعفاتهits fronds
كأن نقيض الليف عن سعفاته
نقيضthe creaking of رحالsaddles of المَيسmays wood فوقatop العياهمthe sturdy camels
نقيض رحال المَيس فوق العياهم
As though the creaking of palm fiber from its fronds
It is as if the opposite of palm fiber from its fronds
Were the creaking of mays-wood saddles atop sturdy camels.
Is the opposite of the sandals of the afflicted above calamities.
واضحتand it became تغاليrising high بالنباتwith growth كأنهاas though it
واضحت تغالي بالنبات كأنها
علىupon متنthe back of شيخan old man منamong شيوخthe elders of الأعاجمthe non-Arabs
على متن شيخ من شيوخ الأعاجم
And it rose high with growth, as though it were
Its vegetation became clearly luxuriant as if it were
Upon the back of an elder among the non-Arabs.
On the back of an old man from the non-Arabs.
وماand not الاصلthe rootstock ماso long as رويتyou soak مضربthe rooting place of عرقهits root
وما الاصل ما رويت مضرب عرقه
منwith الماءwater عنin regard to اصلاحtending فرعa branch بنائمasleep at all
من الماء عن اصلاح فرع بنائم
And the rootstock, so long as you soak its rooting place
