وياand O فارسknight of الدنياthe world وياand O جبلmountain of الارضthe earth
O Muslim, indeed I—O son of the best caliph,
O Muslim, son of the virtuous caliph,
and O knight of the world, and O mountain of the earth—
And O knight of the world and mountain of the earth,
شكرتكI thanked you انالشكرindeed, gratitude حبلa cord منof التقىpiety
وماand not كلevery منone whom أوليتهyou bestowed upon him نعمةa favor يقضىrepays it
have thanked you, for gratitude is a cord of piety.
I thanked you though gratitude is a rope of piety,
And not everyone upon whom you bestow a favor repays it.
And not all those I endowed with bounty fulfill it.
والقيتand you cast لماwhen انemphatic particle اتيتكI came to you زائراas a visitor
عليّover me لحافاa blanket سابغample in الطولlength والعرضand breadth
And when I came to you as a visitor, you cast
When I came to you as a visitor,
over me a blanket ample in length and breadth.
You bestowed upon me a quilt ample in length and width.
واحييتand you revived ليfor me ذكرىmy renown وماand not كانit was خاملاobscure
ولكنbut بعضsome الذكرrenown انبهmore illustrious منthan بعضother renown
And you revived my renown—not that it was obscure,
You revived memories for me that were not dormant,
but some renown is more illustrious than other renown.
But some memories awaken one more than others.
