عاشرthe tenth صبيانيmy boys صغيرlittle فطيمa weanling
عاشر صبياني صغير فطيم
Indeed, my boys, nine in number, said—
The tenth of my boys is a little weanling—
منfrom شهوةcraving البسرthe unripe dates وافلاسهمand their pennilessness
من شهوة البسر وافلاسهم
ماwhat فعلتhas done نخلةdate palm عبدالرحيمAbd al-Rahim
ما فعلت نخلة عبدالرحيم
Out of craving for unripe dates and their pennilessness:
"What has become of Abd al-Rahim’s date palm?"
ياoh ليتهاwould that it انif هوhe لمnot يهدماgive what
يا ليتها ان هو لم يهدما
عوّدناهhe accustomed us to it اصبحتit became كالصريمlike a harvested garden
عوّدناه اصبحت كالصريم
Oh, may it—if he does not give what
he has accustomed us to—become like a harvested garden!
