لماwhen التقيناwe met ماتَdied الكلامُspeech ةداcorrupt fragment, apparently of 'and turned'
لما التقينا ماتَ الكلامُ ةدا
رَcompletion of the preceding 'turned' الموتُdeath دورَthe turning of الرَّحىthe millstone علىupon القُطُبِthe spindle
رَ الموتُ دورَ الرَّحى على القُطُبِ
When we met, speech died, and
death turned as a millstone turns upon its spindle.
فكُلُّناso each of us يَستَليصُseeks to turn aside صاحبَهُhis opponent
فكُلُّنا يَستَليصُ صاحبَهُ
عنaway from نفسهhimself والنفوسُwhile souls فيin كُرَبِanguish
عن نفسه والنفوسُ في كُرَبِ
So each of us sought to turn his opponent
away from himself, while souls were in anguish.

If they charged, we did not leave our positions;
and if we charged, they sank to their knees.
