كفىit suffices حَزَناًas sorrow أنthat تُطعَنَbe pierced الخيلُthe horses بالقَناwith spears
وأُصبِحَand I become مَشدوداًbound عليَّupon me وَثَاقياmy bonds
It is sorrow enough that horses are pierced by spears,
Enough is the sorrow that horses are stabbed with spears
And I find myself with my bonds drawn tight upon me.
And I wake up shackled, my chains binding me
إذاwhen قُمتَyou rise عَنّانيrestrains me الحديدُthe iron وأُغلِقَتand are shut
مَصارعُdoors منfrom دونيbefore me تُصِمُّdeafen المُنادياthe caller
When you rise, the iron restrains me, and shut are
When you pull my iron reins and my gates are locked
Doors before me that deafen the caller.
Leaving me without companions, their voices muted
وقدand indeed كنتُI was ذاpossessed of مالٍwealth كثيرٍabundant وإخوةٍand brothers
فأصبحتُso I have become منهمamong them واحداًalone لاno أخاbrother لياfor me
And once I had abundant wealth and brothers,
I once had abundant wealth and many brothers
But now I am alone among them, with no brother of my own.
Now I am but one, with not a single brother
فإنso if مُتُّI die كانتit will be حاجةًa need قدalready قَضيتُهاI have fulfilled it
وخَلّفتُand I left behind سَعداًSaʿd وحدَهby himself والأمانياand the hopes
So if I die, it will be a need I have fulfilled,
If death comes, I will have fulfilled my needs
And I shall have left Saʿd alone with his hopes.
Leaving only Saad and my hopes behind
وقدand indeed شَفّhas wasted جسميmy body أننيthat I كلّevery شارقٍsunrise
أعالجُI struggle with كبلاًa fetter مُصمَتاًsolid قدalready بَرَانياhas worn me away
And what has wasted my body is that, each sunrise,
My body has healed from all wounds
I struggle with a solid fetter that has worn me away.
Except the shackles that still restrain me
فللّهso to God belongs درِّيmy excellence يومthe day أُترَكُI am left مُوثَقاًbound
وتذهلُand grow heedless عنيof me أُسرتيmy family ورجالياand my men
God bless me, on the day I am left in bonds,
By God, I miss the day I was left bound
While my family and my men lose all thought of me.
While my family and men were confused about me
حبيساًheld captive عنaway from الحربthe war العَوَانoft-renewed وقدand already بَدتit has begun
وإعمالُand the wielding غيريby others than me يومthe day ذاكthat العوالياthe long spears
A captive kept from the oft-renewed war, though it has begun,
Imprisoned, away from the raging war that has started
While others that day wield the long spears.
And others in battle on that fateful day
ولِلهِand to God عهدٌa pledge لاnot أخيسُI break faith بعهدِهwith His covenant
لئنif indeed فُرِجَتrelief is granted أنthat لاnot أزورI visit الحوانياthe taverns
And to God I make a pledge—I will not break His covenant—
I promise God that I will not break my vow
That, if relief comes, I shall not visit the taverns.
That if I am freed, I will not visit taverns
هَلُمَّbring سلاحيmy weapons لاno أباfather لكَfor you إننيindeed I
أرىI see الحربَthe war لاnot تزدادُit increases إِلاexcept تمادياin duration
Bring my weapons—may you have no father!—for I
Come, my weapon, I do not care for you
See the war only growing ever more prolonged.
I see this war only growing more violent
