أتوبُ إِلى الله الرحيم فإنه

أتوبُ إِلى الله الرحيم فإنه

غفورٌ لذنبِ المرءِ ما لم يُعاودِ

غفورٌ لذنبِ المرءِ ما لم يُعاودِ

I repent to God, the Merciful, for He

I repent to Allah the Merciful, for He

is ever-forgiving of a person's sin, so long as he does not repeat it.

Is forgiving of a person's sin unless he repeats it

ولستُ إِلى الصَّهباءِ ما عِشتُ عائداً

ولستُ إِلى الصَّهباءِ ما عِشتُ عائداً

ولا تابعاً قولَ السفيهِ المُعاندِ

ولا تابعاً قولَ السفيهِ المُعاندِ

And I shall not return to tawny wine as long as I live,

And I will not, as long as I live, return

nor follow the words of the obstinate fool.

To frivolity, nor follow the words of the stubborn fool

وكيفَ وقد أعطَيتُ ربَّي مَواثِقاً

وكيفَ وقد أعطَيتُ ربَّي مَواثِقاً

أعودُ لها واللهُ ذو العرشِ شاهدي

أعودُ لها واللهُ ذو العرشِ شاهدي

And how, when I have given my Lord solemn pledges,

How could I, when I have given my Lord solemn covenants

could I return to it, with God, Possessor of the Throne, my witness?

Return to them, with Allah of the Throne as my witness?

سأترُكُها مَذمومةً لا أذوقُها

سأترُكُها مَذمومةً لا أذوقُها

وإِن رَغِمَت فيها أنوفُ حواسدي

وإِن رَغِمَت فيها أنوفُ حواسدي

I shall forsake it as blameworthy, never tasting it,

I will leave them condemned, I will not taste them

even if my enviers' noses are rubbed in the dust over it.
